I'm in the process of setting up my AS80 (I play rhythm rock mostly) and am wondering about strings. My guess is that I'll want 11s or 12s, but should I get flat wound, wound 3rd or standard? That's my biggest question. |

hi houvin yours is a difficult question, for string gauge is a very personal option. any string gauge can be useful. personally i like medium/heavy gauges and i use flatwounds to have an extra smooth tone. bending, in my case, is not important, i play jazz exclusively. if i would play rythm/rock as you do i'll choose moderately heavy, "tight" gauges for power chords. heavier strings give a beefier tone and keep intonation better. that said i think unwound Gs have a too "twangy" sound, i prefer wound thirds greatly. keep in mind that the more you raise the volume, the less you hear string differences... heavy crunched and effected guitars have more "freedom". that's the main reason jazzists use heavy strings, they tend to play at lower volumes. don't be afraid of using heavy gauge strings on your semi, lots of people use them. |
