I see one thread that suggests new 58s are available. But where? Anybody have an opinion on how they'd improve an AS73? (The stocks are pretty bad imho). thanks |

You can order them through any Ibanez dealer. As an alternative, you may want to consider a set of DiMarzio PAF Classics. They have similar to the Super 58s in terms of output and tonality, but more open and have better note articulation IMO. They are inexpensive and easy to get. |

i was wondering the same thing. anyone know where we can get them online? i was also considering getting an as73 or an as83 and doing this upgrade. i'm looking for as close to the sound of an as200 sound as possible. (sorry if i hijacked the thread! just wanted to chime in and reinforce the question!) -James |

I don't think anyone sells them online, or stocks them for that matter. Like I said, you have to special order them through an Ibanez dealer. -Sven |

Thanks, Sven. I'm looking for a classic ES335 sound. Do you think the Super 58s or DiMarzios would be close to a Gibson Classic 57? ... John |

All 3 pickups are very similar, in fact I think the Super 58 may have been based on the Gibson. The DiMarzio is a little more "modern". it's clear and warm. Super 58s can get muddy, and I hear the same comment about the Gibson, which I have not tried. -Sven |

After researching everywhere I could, I get a sense that that the DiMarzio PAF Classics are the way to go. I'll be sure to post a review if I go thru with this upgrade. John |

The sound quality of original Super 58s may be suspect. If you can find the original pickups the wax in which they were potted may have decayed to the point of affecting sound quality in a negative manner. I had been looking for a pair of original Super 58s to restore an AM255 to original condition. I had not considered this as a possibility until I read of this on another thread somewhere on this board. This may be the reason more recently made 58s are more desireable than the originals. I only mention this to reinforce your buying new 58s as opposed to originals; hopefully without offending proponents of the original 58s, as I am sure, there are many. For this reason I bought a Bartolini PBF-49 for the neck and a DiMarzio PAF Classic for the bridge as had been suggested to me on another thread. I am highly pleased with this combination finding these pickups to be extremely pleasing in tone and quality. Now she sings, and it is a pleasure to listen to her do so. |
