I'm not an expert on recording (kind of new to it), but I just tried to record my '76 Howard Roberts. I'm not really a jazzer but I'm trying to learn, and I know my playing sucks, but it is what it is. And this isn't a studio masterpiece, just a plain-Jane recording. Any advice, suggestions or criticisms you have are all greatly appreciated. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=420516&songID=2994321 |

Hey, Regg. Fine selection, and a great sounding instrument. The piece really shows off the full tonal range of the guitar. My only criticism is that a few of the high register notes are not as cleanly fretted as they could be. The flow of the piece is quite good, but could be still be improved a bit. Overall, a fine effort, and a very nice rendition of one of my favorite early Fripp pieces. Thanks! |

Regg: Very cool piece. I like the sound of the HR. How did you record it? What kind of equipment and software? I've heard very little Crimson, but your piece has made me curious to hear the original. |

Massx: Thanks for listening and your observations. I play like I have a disability and don't know why. Sorry you had to hear that, but I hope my intention came through. Johns: I'm plugged into a Tech 21 Trademark 10 amp, and DI to my RME DIGI96/8 PAD soundcard. I used the send in the effects loop because (for some reason that I haven't figured out) the XLR direct wasn't working. Cool Edit Pro 2k is the software. The only processing I'm doing to the file (besides converting to mp3) is "normalizing" since I'm not getting much gain from the preamp. The other tune I uploaded on Soundclick was recorded the same way, only with the treble turned up a little to get a more "jangley" sound. I hope you get to hear the original: it is quite beautiful. The album it comes from is Bruford's first with Crimson, and it is an absolute killer. Thanks. |

Regg, Don't be so hard on yourself. I think you carried the feel of the original quite well. The sweeps nicely done. Keep up the good work, you've got good taste already! |

You play very well and should be doing your own stuff since you obviously have the chops. I suggest lots of the great standards with your own twist and get a good bass player and drummer. |

did you say that your playing sucks!?! obviously you haven't heard lots and lots and lots of people (myself included) who can't even come close to playing like that... i'm liking the tone, too... nice, clean, crisp. i'm not really into crimson or much prog besides a bit of yes and newer stuff like the mars volta (if you call them prog), but i'm also curious to hear some of their stuff after hearing your interpretation. |

Hi, Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to check out the soundclick stuff, and my apologies if you were disappointed. It's just an experiment to see if I can improve my playing knowing that others are listening, and recording tends to bring out the worst in me. Hopefully I will improve my timing and update those tracks soon. |
