i've noticed a little bit of excess play in the tuners on my as73 from the first day i had it, but i was able to deal with it since i was mostly just screwing around by myself.
well, just a few hours ago i was jamming with a band that i've recently started with a few friends and i was getting REALLY frustrated with my constant struggle to stay in tune.
i strum a little on the hard side, i suppose, but i haven't had this problem with other guitars i've played in the past. it actually started to get a little better as the night went on, but the first half hour or so was pure hell.
has anyone else had similar frustrations with the tuners on their artcore? if so, what actions were taken?
any suggestions on good, solid replacements would be much appreciated.

A few things to try before replacement:
Try tightening the screws on the ends of the tuning knob, if your tuners have them. This will increase the resistance and help prevent slippage.
Check the nut to see if the slots are too small for your strings. With the tension off the string, see if it glides freely through the slot. If not, you need to widen it.
Put a little lube in the nut slots. Graphite from a pencil, tri-flow, nut-sauce all work.
If you want to replace your tuners, you can take one off and take measurements to see what will fit. They have dimensions listed at warmoth.com. Gotoh tuners are a good choice, they usually are a good fit as Ibanez uses them on their higher end guitars. The ultimate in stability is a locking tuner. they are about twice the price, and usually only used for trem equipped guitars, but they are very stable. Either way, I think Gotoh 510s are the finest tuners I've used. They look cool, are available in many colors, locking and non-locking. The 510 "Delta" has a 21:1 gear ratio, so they are very accurate. They are what come on the Scofield model. You can order them all from Brain at universaljems.com.

you can also get Gotoh 510's from Stewmac.com as well as the regular lines of Gotohs. I have 510's on my Ak85 and Gotoh schaller styles on my AG85 and they never ever slip. They also have those anti-rocking posts which eliminate play. |

thank you very much, guys. we'll see how the tuners on this beast hold up after i tightened the screws on the tuning buttons and lubed up the nut a bit. if there's much more trouble, i'm just going to bite the bullet and pick up some gotohs, probably.
anti-rocking posts sound REALLY good! when i'm restringing, i can really notice how loose the posts are in the bushings, which can't be too good for stability...

true, but they only have the 3+3 nonlocking 18:1 version. It's really worth getting the 21:1 "delta" version. Support the little guy! Brian can get them all cheaply, and he's a cool guy too. |

I was just helping the guy out - giving him more optios than one - why does someone always have to be confrontational on threads????tried both and see little need to pay 30 more bucks+ for 3 points increase in the tuning ratio. The deltas also don't come on the GB,PM,or JS. They are the 18:1 510's. peace out. 74 bucks is steep enough for most people - deltas are for the monetarily gifted |

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be confrontational. It can be a little confusing with all the different 510 options available, and no real information on them. To me, the real benefit is the 21:1 ratio, and it is not really clear at Stewmac that there are several other versions, and I want to make it clear that you'll have to go to another source to get these: the only 2 I know about are universaljems, and allparts. And allparts will charge you full retail price. I agree they are a premium upgrade. The improvement over the $30 standard Gotoh set is minimal. |

http://www.grizzly.com carries some of the 510 line (Delta? dunno). They also carry a Gotoh Magnum Series with height adjustable posts. Cool.
Page 320 of their online catalog.
You may have to shop around to find the model/style/color you want at the cheapest price. The links page on my site has a pretty good list of sources. Hope this helps.

I'm thinking of upgrading tuners on my AK85 and my choices are these: 1)Gotoh 510 deltas with ebony buttons (nickel)2) Schaller nickel M6s with ebony buttons; or 3) Tone Pros/Kluson keystone-style satin nickel tuners with aged ivoroid buttons. The Tone Pros/Klusons would require re-drilling holes. A fourth option would be to just add ebony buttons to my existing Ibanez tuners. Does anyone know a replacement ebony button that would fit on my stock AK85 tuners? Any other options I could look at? |
