Hey guys,

I'm on the hunt for an old Ibanez hollowbody...I know I want a 70s-early 80s MIJ, but are some years better than others? MY '84 AM-50 rules, so I'm sure the later ones are good, but are the 70s ones better? Worse? The same?

Thanks!

Mike

Mike:

This is kind of a loaded question. I can't think of any late 70s/early 80s, MIJ hollowbody that hasn't got a number of fans on this site.

The various models are certainly different. Maybe body size and thickness, or neck width and profile. And then the woods are different maple top vs. spruce, rosewood vs. ebony for fretboards. But these are not factors that should be categorized as "best" or "worse", IMO.

What kind of music, sound or feel are you looking for?

I was referring more to general build quality than the specific models. I have a pretty good idea of what I like as far as features are concerned.

I'm looking for an upgrade to my current jazz box. The 2355 looks really great, but I wonder if the pre-76 ones are better or worse than the post lawsuit variations (FA, AF, etc)...

I have a pre lawsuit (1973-74) 2355 and it's a great sounding, high quality guitar. My only gripe is its narrow neck. You can go to my webpage and listen to "Oleo" for a recording of my 2355.

Sounds great...when you say narrow neck do you mean the strings are close together or that the neck is thin front to back?

I just let a sweet 2355 slip away on ebay...the auction ended while I was asleep...I hate that! :-) I guess I'm still on the hunt... :-(

When I say narrow, I mean both ways. However, I tried a reissue Gibson l-4ces with the same string spacing but that neck was a little chunkier anyway.
One note is that I, personally, like the laminate spruce top better than the maple tops. It does have more depth and warmth to it, at least the ones I have compared.

Oh, I'm jeaslous...if I could find a 2355 in decent shape for $800 I'd be all over it...I got close on a couple of ebay auctions, but I haven't found too many of them...I'd really prefer the 2355 to the FA-100, but I'll take what I can get!
