Have any of you used Dr. Stringfellow?

I purchased a guitar from a shop that is across the country from me. Received it yesterday. When I pulled it out of the box, it smelled funny - like smoke. I figured the shop had smokers. I dropped them an e-mail to say I was disappointed that the guitar smelled badly of cigarette smoke. They replied saying no one in the shop smokes and that it is a smoke free environment. He said maybe it is the smell of the Dr. Stringfellow product applied to the guitar.

I'm not familiar with this product. Have any of you here ever used it? Does it smell like liquid smoke? The shop owner seems nice enough, but I don't know him from Adam.

By the way, any tips on removing cigarette smoke from a guitar? First time I've ever experienced this.

Wildfield,

The thorough cleaning process I do usually gets rid of any trace of smell. If it is bad, I will remove all the hardware; clean the metal parts in naptha and then with metal polish (only on chrome); clean the paint with a series of auto cleaners, polishes and waxes; Clean and oil the fretboard ; polish the frets. There is obviously no way to clean the inside of a hollowbody, but I've never seen one so smokey that it caused a problem. Sometimes the case has the funk, either from smoke, or sometimes cases just smell really bad - if this is the case, any cleaning you do to the guitar will be negated when you put it back in the case :-) There is no way I have found to get the smell out of a case.

Thanks Sven.

I bought the guitar new from a shop without a case. However, I put it in a spare gig bag that I had to store the guitar. After dinner, I'll pull it out of the closet to see if the gig bag absorbed any of the odor.

I intend to check the smell out a little closer this evening. Appreciate your comments on how to give a guitar a thorough cleaning. I may have to give it try.

P.S. I'll try to post a pic of the guitar later. It's kind of interesting - very much like the Cort or Schecter that is shaped like a semi hollow PRS. The brand is called Malden.

Is this it?

Looks a lot like my Dillion DR450.

Yep, that's the one. From what I have read it is made in the same factory as Schecter. Not sure which factory that would be (I don't keep up with that kind of stuff). I'm guessing Samick.

I checked out Dillion's website. It does look very similar to the DR450 and MSRP looks to be around the same as well.

Got it to use while the AM70 is in the shop. Would have liked to have gotten another AM or that Yamaha SAS1500 that was recently on e-Bay, but haven't been able to win an auction lately.

I think the dillion is made by Cort. It is very similar to the Cort M800 http://www.cort.com/guitars/mirage/index.html. I like that the Cort has 22 frets, rather than 24.
