Found this in a music store. It's been on consignment for over a year, which is no surprise given the condition and the $795 price tag. It appears to be an MIJ sunburst AM-50 (small body semi, f-holes). However, the info on the back of the headstock is scratched off and the inside label (one corner of which has lifted loose) says it's an AS-50. Am I correct in thinking that it's not an AS if it's a small body? It has a crown shape headstock, no-cover, cream-colored pups (DiMarzios maybe?), replacement pickguard and tuners, with resulting holes all over. The controls look old and more solid than on my newish AS-73. I figure it was probably stolen at some point in its life, though according to the store owner, the consignee has had it for a long time and doesn't figure to be a thief. Any thoughts or info you can give me on this? Thanks -- John

By the way, I'm no woods expert, but the fretboard seems to be either rosewood or striped ebony. Is that possible?

The AS-50 had a body size inbetween the AMs and the AS-100/200, so it probably is an AS-50 if it has a smaller body, it just isn't as small as the AMs.

Check out Funkle's AM Website to get more detailed information about the AM and the AS50: http://www.speakeasy.org/~sven/site/

Here is a quote from his website, "In 1980, they supplemented the AS line with the AS50. This new model had the same basic shape and construction as the other guitars in the AS line, but the semi-hollow body was about %75 smaller. This was the predecessor to the AM series." - The Ibanez AM Site

MAny thanks for the info. I've been to Funkle's AM site may times to ogle the AMs, but that part about the AS-50 as a kind of AM precursor never registered. Interesting.
