found this gb10 heavily modified at a deal price. in your opinion how much $ would it take to get her back to it's original state? unfortunately all the original parts have been lost. i'd like to buy it but have many doubts... don't know if the bigsby put holes on the top/tail of the guitar.

Congratulations on the "new" guitar! Hope you can find the parts to restore her to your liking. I hope that Bigsby did not put any holes on the top, as you mentioned. I have seen GB pickups and tailpiecs on e-Bay a couple times over the past several years. Definitely not too common, but I have seem them. I think I saw the tailpiece sell for just over $100. If you cannot find the stock Ibanez floating pickups, I would think you could find a reasonable replacement from Stew Mac or someplace like that. Anyway good luck, and I'd be interested to hear later, if you were able to find parts. |

Petruz~ Depending on how much of a 'deal' the seller is willing to let it go for, I'd be very careful with this GB. First of all, what is the overall condition of the non-modded guitar? If it's in good to great condition, maybe it's worth putting out the cash for the original pickups/guard, bridge, tailpiece. And maybe the guitar sounds and plays fine as is. Someone went through a lot of trouble to get that 'rockabilly' looking GB. Bixbys can be removed but you might consider other tailpiece styles to replace it if the GB10 style is not available or is price prohibitive where you live. A nice ebony tailpiece to match an ebony bridge would look very nice as long as it covers any Bixby mounting holes in the top. A good place to get parts prices is Ibanez' website. That will give you the highest prices for comparison purposes. Then keep posting here and check Ebay. Let us know what you decide, and good luck! Tim |

Petruz, Well a GB with Melitta bridge, DeArmond pickups and a Bigsby. Hmmm... Well it could sound pretty cool. As Guitartim says depending on how good a deal it is pricewise this could be a fun guitar. Also, if the Gretsch parts are vintage they too are worth something to resell - the Meiltta bridge must be worth at least $100 to $150.00 alone !! Same for the pickups - vintage would get you some decent money and if they are TV Jones replacements they'd really sound very good - TV Jones made such good replacement Gretsch pickups that Gretsch eventually switched to them !!! The killer though is how the pickups are mounted: are they somehow mounted floating style to the neck and pickguard, ala a real GB10 style, or have there been holes drilled into the top to accept them - or hole drilled to mount them on the top. If holes have been cut into the top it'd seriously degrade the value of the GB10 were your intentions to bring it back to stock. Lastly I believe you can order from Ibanez most of the parts you'd need to get it original: pickups, pickguard and tailpiece. A good friend in America could contact a chain guitar store such as Guitar Center and see if the parts can be gotten. I know from experience when I wanted to replace my GB10s tuners that was the route I went. Looked up the parts on line at Ibanez's website and then went to a local authorized Ibanez reseller, in this case a Guitar Center in San Francisco, ordered/paid for the parts. 10 days later the store called me, they had my tuners in !! Good luck on that one, it's sorta cool looking. De Armonds are single coil pickups and a little bright sounding but nice... It could be a very rocking guitar AS IS. |

thanks a lot for your tips. i'll contact the seller and check out the details. unfortunately this guitar is far from rome and i'll not be able to try it in person. anyway i would consider buying it only if i was completely sure to be able to "redo" it back to 1982 form. |

As the GB10 is a current model, you can get all the parts from Hoshino. But beware: the pickguard shape has changed from the earlier models (when it changed I can't say) and the new screw holes don't line up. I bought a new pickguard and pickups and still haven't figured out what to do. The easiest solution is to elongate the holes to get an extra 1/16". But there isn't that much space between the top hole and the binding. |
