Here is an interesting AM205. Someone has appeared to have removed the finish on the neck. The seller says the neck has been "shaved". I'ved dropped the seller an e-mail to see if the neck has truly been reduced in thickness, or if just the finish had been removed. I wonder if this modification will result in a (much) lower winning bid. I also wonder how the neck has been affected. http://cgi.ebay.com/1982-Ibanez-Artist-AM-205-Semi-Hollow-Guitar_W0QQitemZ738470 7660QQcategoryZ33043QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |

Nice guitar, i have a little experience with neck shaving jobs, on my blue modded AM205 we did shave a little off...the result was reasonable good, its in tune and it plays excellent. My Ibanez Am66 i bought with a shaved neck , done also very well, only the seller didn't put lacquer on it, so hopefully in the future i will adjust that. I also have an orginal AM205 super edition and if i'm very honest after comparing these guitars...i state that neck shaving is not really worth doing.....remember once done you can't go back.... this is one on Ebay is nice lets see for how much it will go.Prices for these models will go up. |

Does the neck shaving remove all the finish or is there enough of the finish in the pores of the wood to keep oils and moisture from affecting the neck? Being in the wood business I know that if you finish only one side of a piece of wood, it will eventually warp as moisture is absorbed into the unfinished side. In that this was finished and then "shaved", there may be enough of the finish to prevent moisture and skin oils from penetrating the neck. If the finish was entirely removed down to absolute bare wood, I'd be concerned. It seems a little much to actually remove the finish. When I was the wood buyer for Tacoma Guitars, the head luthier would take the gloss off the finish of the neck for artists that requested it, but wouldn't come even close to removing it. Also, why couldn't you go back? Can't a competent luthier refinish the neck? |
