Have anybody seen a PM100 SB? Here it is one. Somebody is offering it on a japanese site. Does anybody know if this is one of those options just available for the japanese market? Custom made? Refinished?

BTW, I noticed that very little has been said about the PMs. I was wondering if anybody here is using/has used one and how is it performing? Did anybody compare it side by side with the other archtops?
Thanks.

Fg100:

This is a beautiful looking guitar! I've never heard of a burst finish. But I'd bet it is a special Japanese market only item, rather than a refin.

If you don't buy it, let Pat know about it. He should buy it! :-)

I've noticed the lack of chatter about the PM models, too. Not sure why. Maybe they are too contemporary for this vintage crowd?

Actually I'm not thinking in buying that one... I ran into it (the webpage) by chance. It's true there's somebody around my area selling a black one.... but I would have to choose one to go... FG100 or AS200...

Does anybody have some experience playing one?

hi fg... great to hear you again...
i tried a PM100 three months ago. although i played it only for a bunch of minutes i give you my impressions.
• craftsmanship: very high and up to the best ibanez tradition. superb tuners. guitar was surprisingly heavy, though, and feedbacked immediately when i raised the amp volume.
• neck: slighltly "beefier" than most ibanezes i know. the ibanez site gives it a good 1mm more than the GBs under the 1st fret. anyway, very comfortable, but not my personal choice.
• overall: seems a very nice ibanez, i'm one of those who think it's a beautiful design (a lot of people say it's ugly).
i'd say that generally speaking it's a lot on the FG-side (no surprise here...). the problem is that you can get a good ol' FG for half the price, with almost all the appointments and (IMO) a nicer neck. another thing to consider is that an FG will probably have a more aged, mature tone.

Thank you guys for the comments.

Johns, you're probably right "Maybe they are too contemporary for this vintage crowd".

Emilio, you think he's around us?

Petruz, I have been so busy.. but every now and then I pass by to check what's going on..
You really think it's on the FG 'side'? I was thinking it would be somewhere more on the AF200 side... because of the ebony fingerboard... on the other hand it's an ebony fingerboard plus a mahogany neck (I always heard that mahogany gives more sustain). So, more sustain with the ebony fast attack ... I read somewhere that it's a one piece mahogany neck (which seems to improve even more the sustain and resonance...)

I've played them. I had feedback issues as well. Perhaps this is why Pat doesn't actually play it. :-)

Nice guitar, but not quite my thing. I'd prefer a Benson, AF-200, or older FGs, FAs, etc...

Thanks Msawitzke.
I've read about feedback issues with the PMs, but I remember reading Pat say that he doesn't have any because he places his right arm a bit above the top f hole... It sounds too simplistic for me...

If Pat M. does not play his own 'signature model', why does Ibanez keep offering them for sale...and at a premium 'list' price of over $3,000?

They must be selling...................somewhere.

After posting the previous note, I did a little research on Pat Metheney's official website. Now I can answer my own question about him playing his signature model.

HE DOES! Here is a 1999 Q & A from his site including an answer from Pat Metheney himself about the use of Ibanez guitars:

"User: John Monllos
Date: Sep 11 1999
Subject: 175 or Ibanez?
Question: First of all Pat I love the new CD with Jim Hall!!! I am curious did you play the 175 or the Ibanez on this date? (I can't Tell) it looks like the 175 in the picture. Also do you turn down the tone on the guitar to get a darker sound for this type of date? Thanx for your time... John
Pat's Answer: hi john
it is the ibanez pm-100 on that date; the blonde one. one thing i really like about the ibanez guitars is that i DON'T have to turn the tone control down too much to get a darker sound - those pickups are louder and much fatter sounding than the old gibson ones (although the vintage guitar purist types will no doubt continue to harp on me about how the 175 sounds "so much better" than the ibanez; which honestly is just pure hogwash - and that is coming from the person who loves that 175 more than anyone on earth)

the fact that you (and most other people) cannot tell the difference on this record and several others proves my point. hey, i don't sound defensive here, DO I???!?!!

i'm really glad you like the record with jim - it was such a thrill to make for me.

thanks for writing in from pat"

Tim:

I'm an eyewitness that Pat plays his Ibanez guitars in concert.

Considering that he has gobs of custom made guitars that he plays on stage, I assume he could have anybody make his guitar of choice to use as a workhorse guitar. The fact that he leaves that in Ibanez's hands is saying something.

The only thing that I've heard (can't remember where though) is that he has a tech/luthier tweak his personal models. If this is true, I'd expect that someone of Pat's caliper has "special needs" which a pure production model might not address.

BTW, feedback has never been a problem at any concerts I've been to.

I read about him having somebody doing things on the Linda Manzel acoustic guitars... like installing XLR conections or mics...

I just got this info from a source at Hoshino, USA:

"Pat tours so much he doesn't even come home in the sense that you or I do. It is highly unlikely that he will ever do clinics (although I've learned to never say never)."

He also said that he's never seen the PM100 in sunburst, but he likes it. Another example of the Japanese and USA offerings being very different.

Thanks Johns.

I have to say that the more I look at this pic the more I like it. I think it's nicer than the NT or BK.
