Does anyone out there know if the JSM100 comes with medium gauge jazz strings ?? I just bought a brand spanking new one and the strings seemed a little heavier than what I expected and the g wasn't wound. I do want to put 13-56 dadario medium jazz gauge if i think the neck can handle it

Also, is the pickup an Alnico 3 or 5 magnet ? The super 58, i am thinking of changing to a seymour duncan jazz model to up the clarity factor a bit.
All in all the delivery of the guitar exceeded all my expectations, very suprised at the current quality and packaging, great !!!!

Any thoughts, the strings I put on there are 12-52 and the neck seems to be ok but I turned the rod maybe a bit too much, i wanted to put jazz medium gauge, 13-56 on there, any one put that gauge on the sco model ??

Well, Rguit, I can tell you that I have an as120 which was the model just under the Scofield model and I wouldn't dream of putting 12's or 13's on it. If I wanted to do clean Jazz I would use d'addario chromes 11's which will not evenneed a rod twist...I tried using 12's on my af75 , tightened the neck a tad, and a few days later the neck twisted slightly., so I twisted the rod back and put on 11's and the neck is perfect again. Of course the af75 is a hollowbody and the as120 is a 335 type.

scuse me joevocht if i'll not agree with you. i have an AS200 with 13/53 flats on it and the neck is very straight. i use the same setup with all my ibanezes, GB30 and AM205 included. i see no reason not to do so.
scofield himself uses a custom set od d'addario rounds:
.013
.016
.022 - plain (unwound)
.032
.042
.052
as you see that's pretty heavy too.
rquit, you could try labella or thomastik-infeld flats. these two brands make sets of .13's that end with .53's. that's the equivalent, in terms of load, to d'addarios set of .12's, and they're much better balanced throughout (very similar load per each individual string, preventing neck twists).
seems that sco has got this point too!

JSM100's come from the factory with 13's, ala Sco's choice.

My recently scored used 2003 came with a fresh set of 10's which are too light for my taste and a set of wound D'Addario 11's are going on this weekend.

The pickups are standard issue Super 58's. Maybe someone else can comment on the specific magnets used. If you put a set of SD Jazz p'ups in it, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. They are sweet pickups, especially for semi-hollows.

All I can say is that JSM's are fine sounding and playing instruments...right out of the box!

Petruz, you don't have to qualify your disagreement with me...perhaps I should explain that the neck problem with the af75 occurred before I purchased the as120 and so I became a little gun shy (string shy?) about putting 12's or 13's on the as120. I settled for d'addario 11's on it and , as I have stated in other messages, I'm in heaven with it, you see I play all kinds of music, even put bends and pulloffs to play while performing jazz, blues and Latin,so for me its probably a little bit of choice...I'm sure the neck of the as120 could take 13's, but that would effect a slight limitation on me. I used to use 13's and 12's (flat wounds) on my Ibanez Joe Pass without any problem whatsoever, but that was my younger days (80's) Oh and thanks for the info re Scofield, glad to see he uses a bare 'g' ...allways hated the wound ones myself.

Thanks for all the input, i appreciate it, i just wanted to make sure I wasn't putting too much tension on the neck since this was the first thinline semi i bought in twenty years. I have been using fatter archtop boxes and play mostly jazz. the wound G is a sound I want, but not for everyone, I personally can't play a guitar with antying less than 12-52 because I don't bend a real lot and its not enough tension to play the stuff I like, personal preference.

Thamks again, for all the input

petruz, like your idea about the thomatik-enfeld string, (probably spelled that wrong), 13-53, I am going to try them and get my guitar guy in this area to setup the JSM and check the nut and frets, I bought a benson a few years ago and he said the bone/brass nut is sometimes a little HIGH and needs to be lowered a bit along with a general setup
