A Friend of mine is planning on purchasing a New Guitar in the near future and would like your thoughts on the Ibanez AF75 D(TOR) Guitar.
He owned a Gretch Hollow Body (Model ???) many years ago and knows that this Ibanez cannot be compared "Point for Point" with a Gretch Guitar, but would appreciate any thoughts you Guys/Gals might have on this Ibanez site.??
I have showed him the various "Reviews" on the "Harmony-Central" site,and I have read alot on the various models of Ibanez Hollow-Body Guitars and can find nothing but "Raving" Reviews for these Fine Crafted Guitars.
The prices seems to be the "Best-Value" in my opinion !!!
I have another "Post" explaining that I am Purchasing a Ibanez AK86 DVS Guitar in the next 6 weeks *I am really "In Love" with this model.
Thanks for any info or thoughts...!!!

Well, I used to own a gretsch 65 tennessean mucho years ago and I now own an af75 and an as120. Actually the as120 can be compared to the gretsch cause it is like being in heaven (whatever that is) playing it...much like I felt with the gretsch. The af75, though not as beautiful as a gibson L5, is an incredible guitar nonetheless! it plays well whether you use 9's or 11's flatwounds...12's and 13's put a little pressure on the neck and require a slight adjustment, but I found 11's to be perfect for this guitar. I use a vox valvetronix 30 watt and get all kinds of incredible sounds from it with the stock pickups (had it for 6 months now) and jazz is its forte...blues is another thing...for this the as120 reigns supreme in my estimation. I love the orange color of the af and the cherry of the as...the neck is well formed on both and the fit and finish on both are impeccable. |

I'd add to that by saying the fretwork on the AF75 and other artcores is amazing. Better than the Korean equivalents IMO. But they have to cut costs somewhere on a $300 guitar, and it is in the hardware. The pickups, bridge and tuners are usable, but could certainly be improved upon. This guitar is a good starting point, and it would easy enough to upgrade the hardware if it became an issue, but then you will have spent $600 on the guitar, and could have just bought a better one in the beginning. Just a few things to think about.

A friend and I spent quite a bit of time comparing various Hollow and Semi-hollow electrics of every brand we could get a hold of. 2 major stores each had an AF75DTOR and we kept going back to these guitars over and over. It was, IMHO, the unchallenged winner of our comparison. The only other guitars we really liked were twice the price or more. I bought an AF75DTOR, and 6 months later, so did he. The quality of this guitar is way beyond what I expected for $300.
To suit my personal taste in tone, I replaced the magnets with Alnico 2 for the neck pickup and Alnico 5 for the bridge. Popped in a Sprague capacitor for a master tone control, and rewired it for coil split and phase reverse capability. You don't have to do these things, I just do stuff like this to every guitar I own. |

Craig, did you include the AF105 in your comparison? It seems that for the $600 price, you're getting a little more guitar than if you souped up an AF75. I was particularly impressed with the fretwork and the tight workmanship of the laminated neck. |

Nobody had an AF105 to compare, but at that price range, it's equally an outstanding value and probably one of the nicest-looking hollow boxes on the planet. I've been eyeing up the new AS103. Want to try one in person - this has got to be another incredible guitar at a great price. Alas, I think my GAS money has run out, so I'll probably never own one. But, you never know...if I do enough setups, rewirings, and fret jobs... |
