I was browsing the 2005 Guitar Player readers choice awards in the April issue, and at first I thought: OK. here we go - the usual selection of crappy overpriced Gibson & Fender re-issues - it really is just a popularity contest, and probably represents the first 5 guitars your average reader could think of.

Then I noticed the Ibanez Artcore United (incorrectly listed as an AS195AV) holding the number 5 spot in "Best Hollowbody Electric". I was psyched to see this great guitar there, but then I thought, how on earth did this happen? Most people don't even know what an AS193 (or AS195 for that matter) is. And the United line was quickly canned in '04, and rarely appeared in stores, other than as a liquidation special.

Maybe the upside is Ibanez will notice this and revive the United line. John?

When GP was conducting thier survey, they called me and asked which semi I prefer. Naturally, I told them about my 193.

Last week, I discovered an AS 193 "Made in Japan" on the website of my favourite guitar shop
http://www.rareguitar.de
At first I tought "MIJ" was a mistake, but thanks to the wealth of information on this wonderful discussion forum I learned that it wasn't and that the AS 193 was a great guitar and a rare one, too. I went there the next day, together with a professional guitar player friend }of mine (who's quite a G&F snob), checked her out and took her home. Payed 720€ w/case!
Here she is:
as193

anyone here got any idea how many of them were buildt 2003/04?

You found a very nice United series. They are excellent guitars and have great necks. The only weak part is the machine heads. I replaced them with Gotoh 510's on both my AG195 and AF195.

Yeah - I already noticed that! ;-)
I don't see what should be wrong with the machine heads, apart from the "perloid" (read: plastic) pegheads, that might more easily get broken in case of a crash. On the other hand: I'd rather have on of them broken than the force of the impact going thru the machine head and into the headstock and breaking THAT!

I'd still like some info on the buildt numbers...

There are ok machine heads and there are good machine heads. The Gotoh 510 matches the rest of the guitar in terms of quality. It is like Sears tires on a Porsche. They'll work but the car deserves something better.
