Hey Guys,

I just bought this As80 today. Was $400 to much?
What type of pickups does this have? Serial no: S5011218, any idea about the age? I might want to switch the humbuckers out. I play blues quite a bit, how about some Rio Grande Hums?

Congrats on your new AS80 it looks great!. $400.00 was a fair price for your guitar, it would have been a little better if it had a case. I would guess it is from the mid to late 90's. They changed the headstock in the late 90's and I like your version a lot better. Yours is probably a little better than the later version. It should have Super 58 pickups which will be fine. Enjoy your new guitar!

Prince_julian00:

Your AS80 is a 1995 model. Looks nice in Natural finish.

Sorry, I can't help with the Rio Grande question, I have no experience with them.

Does anyone now how the Super 58 pickups sound in comparison to the Gibson 57 Humbuckers?

Stick with the super 58s. For the money, I don't find the gibson 57's to sound better. If you are really looking for a clearer or more modern EQed pickup try Seymour Duncans. Mine has a SD Jazz in the neck and a SD JB in the bridge and I couldnt be happier with my sound.

I have had both a 2000 gibson es335 dot reissue and an AS120 and I can tell you for sure...the tonal variations on the 335 are more vast than the super 58's, however, the super 58's are sweeter sounding and for blues and jazz they are a god-send, so enjoy your guitar cause you made a great deal with a wonderful instrument.

That's wonderful Julian, glad to hear that. I'm just really confused tho...three weeks ago you paid 400.00 for the ax...now your asking 700.00???? What kind of work was done to the guitar to justify that kind of increase?

I don't like the cutaways on these or the Gibby semi hollow. I prefer my AS103 which in my opinion plays and sounds better then a Gibby.
