What is a resonable price for a '81 AS-200 [same as John Scofield's] in a mint condition with a hardcase? I have offer for a 1,277 USD

I got my 1980 one from a US seller for $1235, which translates as cheap for the UK, so I'd say definitely go for it if mint is mint.

Check the price database for recent selling prices. 1200-1400 does seem to be the norm. But if yours is in fact mint, it should fetch a lot more. There was one a while back that still had the protective plastic on the pickups and pickuard that went for over 2 grand.

Thanks for you replies,
I've got this picture from a guy who is selling that AS200, unfortunately we are not living in a same city, so I can't simply go there and check guitar by myself. I know it's not-so-much-telling picture, but from what you see can you give me your opinion or advice, is guitar in this condition worth $1277 with hardcase?

Serial is D815426 if that means something..
Is '81, lets say, best period for this guitars?

Cheers

'81 is correct. Looks original and in pretty good shape. Maybe a little tarnish on the bridge/tailpiece?

I'd ask the seller to qualify "mint". Does it have any tarnish, scratching, dents, cracks, fret wear, binding shrinkage. If it exhibits any of these things at all, then it's really not "mint", which means essentially unplayed in my book.

Either way, $1277 is a very fair price. I'd expect you could sell it for more if it is truly mint.

Mano:

'81 is a great year for the AS200!

I've never seen an AS200 with the triangular cloud piece. It's definitely not shown in the '81 catalog either (http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1981/p14.jpg)

The ancestor to the AS200, the model 2630, did use it for a short time. (http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1978/p07.jpg)

It's obviously not in mint condition, but played and taken care well.. From what i see it haves tarnish on bridge and probably on tuners.
And you suggest to go for if it don't have any major scratching, dents, cracks.. ? Probably it haves moderate fretwear..

What about tailpiece.. have you ever seen this type on '81 AS200? If it's not original should price be lower?

How can i be shure that guitar is loaded with super 58? Is there any visual sign? maybe below PU?

Thanks for all your replies,
Just to annotate that I'm not collector but young student player and very Ibanez fun. This is my most expensive guitar i ever tried to afford far now, so sorry for all my questions and for not being informed well, i think you'll understaint :-) I just want to pay fair price for the guitar. I really appriciate all your help, and i promise some really cool pictures to send you if I decide to buy this beauty :-)

Mano,

The pickups may be Super 70s rather than 58s. Mine has 70s. They are probably original, because they have 3 mounting screws rather than 2.

I think the price is very fair. Some tarnish, and cracking around the bindings and neck is pretty common for a 25 year old guitar.

So what's the cloud doing there? How can the seller prove it's stock? Is it to cover up some damage or an abandoned project, like fitting a Bigsby or something? Maybe the seller knows. If I were seriously after this guitar, I might ask for a pic of the top with the cloud removed. If he doesn't like the question, you probably wouldn't like the answer.

Hi guys,
I've finally found some time to take a photos of my new baby.. AS200 '81 !! I really can't describe how happy am I :-) Like someone in previous post said "this is my first >REAL< instrument".. Now I trully understaint meaning of that sentence. THIS IS A INSTRUMENT. AS200 haves some unique "lovability" and sounds FANTASTIC! Very, very balanced. It can beat almost every Gibson. Great value for a guitar. I can't go to sleep before I don't open hardcase and at least take a look to this gorgeous guitar. Same thing is when i wake up. :-)

Here are the pictures I made. Guitar haves a bit tarnish on PUs, bridge and tuners, which is common for this guitar age and price? Besides that everything is flawless.

Enjoy.
