I'm planning to try a set of Seymour Duncan Phat Cats (P90s) in my '81 AS-50. Can anyone tell me if there would be an impedance issue with those pickups and the stock volume & tone pots? Thanks, John |

I have Phatcats in my Epiphone Dot Studio. My favorite guitar. Sound is incredible, has the shine and twang of a tele, complexity and richness of a humbucker. REALLY REALLY great blues or blues-oriented jazz sounds. Tone is easy, but not too easy, to distort and has that old-time fuzz. Sounds best through Marshall VS-65R, but very nice through the Fender Pro Junior. There has never been any issue with pots - although mine have been replaced, the values I installed are all same as stock. |

Thanks, Gary. I finally got mine in and I agree, they're awesome. I really went around the block on it, because when I went in, planning to use the stock 500K vol pots, I found them stamped "15K." Totally confused, thinking the guitar must have had low impedance pups in it at some point, I bought a set of 250k's and used them. Then I had a friend put the old pots on a meter and they were 500K, despite the stamping. But it all worked out. The Phat Cats do exactly as you described. I would add that another big advantage is that chords sound cleaner. John |

Ha! Another convert! I understand that different people could have different tastes in guitar sounds, but how can ANYONE not salivate over an ES-335 type guitar with P-90's thru Marshall and Fender amps? Isn't that the sound we all try to get, often can't and then go on to whatever we CAN get - and call that place where we wanted to be all along. Yeah, right. Try it, you'll like it! For added zest, this guitar is the Epiphone Dot Studio I had completely overhauled. Frets pleked, new turners, stopbar, bridge, wiring, pots, capacitors -- and those lovely P-94's. If truth be told, I'm happier with this guitar in hand than my AF105FNT, which (up until 2 weeks ago) I thought was about the best a guitar could be, that the differences between guitars from this level up had to be about wood selection, hardware, finishes and label...I've never been so happy to be wrong. Even counting the extra labor costs to have everything done by a top-flight tech, at $1250 (including a case) I have only spent about the same amount as a good grade used guitar. Which would not be customized to my exact personal choices. And, by the way, with proper attention to detail, the Dot Studio is a truly amazing bargain for a project guitar. I would think the same could be said of all the AF75's I see discounted all over the local GC, but I haven't tried it with one of them. |
