I don't have one but have tried one.
Without repeating everything you have already read ... what I can say is, the sound might not be in the 'dark sounding' category, but in my opinion it's definitely beautiful... And the neck is great! One of the best I have played on a jazz box. (I have an AF200, a 2355 and had a FG100)

Just my opinion, of course.

If you can, go ahead and try one. Your opinion is what will really matter at the end.

my 2c.

I've heard the pickup placement contributes to the bright sound. I saw Joe Pass a few times; twice he was playing his JP model. Personally, I did not care for his tone when he played the JP20 - it was too bright, thin and harsh sounding for me. Fortunately is phenomenal playing greatly overshadowed whatever might be lacking in the tone of the guitar.

Well, im not fond of overly brite sounds, i guess you could roll back the controls.. so i guess what im hearing is that the jp20 is more bright , im looking for something to compliment my 2355 and as73. its sounding like the gb 10 would fit the bill-- jazzz

I still think you should have a go if you have the opportunity.
I tried it through a nice amp with the tone a bit turned down. I don't like bright tones either, and I can tell you it didn't sound bright at all... and definitely not harsh nor thin.

JP said he cared more about the music than the equipment... I think this reflects his generation that was more into the pure music and less gear oriented. Once asked about what amp he used he answered that sometimes he would play through the house sound system or even bad amps...or no amp but with a mic in front of the guitar… what was important was the music…I bet he sounded different each time, but always great music.

If you can, try one to have your own opinion.

I tend to agree with you , all these pedals and boutique amps gets to be too much. when i listen to Wes or Joe., or the great ones, your hearing the guitar up front, not the other way around, too bad it took me over 30 years to figure it all out, now on to my pursuit of hard bop lines, just my 2c. jazzz

Here's an interesting JP20. It has been refinished and has a different pickguard and tailpiece. Too bad the seller doesn't provide more photos.

That's better! Wow, that red is pretty wild. The bridge looks very cool.

I'd really rather have that Greco EX800.
