Ended up going for $721.00. That's a good deal.

Stacey,

Why did you stop at $500.=?
It went for just a little more than the price you had in mind for the AF105NT. Or did you already decide on the one or two Artcores, and would you like to have the 2355 as your second or third?

Ginger,

I bought another 81, AS50 and an AF105. I can' get enough of the Japan AS50's. I am going to put flat wound strings on the latest AS50 for a different sound.

Also, I am in the hunt for a Black Face Fender Princeton Reverb, so money is a little tight for the 2355.

I think my guitar collection ends (for awhile) at (2) 81, AS50's, (1) AF105, and (1) Taylor 310 acoustic.

The Princeton (silver face) could have been my first amp, if I hadn't found my Polytone 104 in the same shop that advertized the used Princeton. I wanted a transistor amp because they don't need to cool down after each gig, but the Kustom and the Polytone in the shop had a warmer sound. I found the Princeton a bit thin with my Fender Stratocaster then. But the mint second hand Polytone was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I paid only 200 guilders more ($100) than for the Princeton, because the owner had become incurably ill (some ugly muscle disease) and sold everything to the shop.
I don't know if there's a lot of difference in sound between the black face and the silver face, but I don't remember the sound as very jazzy...
Did you consider buying an amp with a built-in chorus like the Marshall Valvestate 8240 or 8280? They have only one tube and sound warmer than the Princeton IMO.
And if you don't want any tubes in it and you are really going for Fender, perhaps consider buying a Fender Power Chorus...

Whatever you buy, try it with your own guitar(s) and if possible next to some other brands/types.
I think the chorus + reverb amps I meantioned are both warmer and more versatile than the Princeton. If you're going to play jazz and blues they will give you more satisfaction.
And I don't expect the price difference to be high if there is any (the 8240 will be the cheapest alternative, I guess).

Anyway good luck.

REGARDING PRINCETON REVERB AMP, its an ok amp, very much over priced now, even the silver faced is overpriced, its vry good for recording or the smallest coffee house or practice , but it wiill not cut a gig with a live band, i think your other idea about the PEAVEY CLASSIC 30 IS MORE realistic for gigs and such, ps, i think that was one heck of a deal on the 2355. sorry you didnt get it, jazz

Ginger, Jazz I was able to play a black face Princeton (not with my guitars) and I loved the overall presentation of it. The classic 30 came the closest in the sound that I have been able to find, with more versatility. Although, there was something about that vintage sound that did something for me.

I will look into the Marshall's you suggested above. I am not hooked on Fenders, just liked the sound of the Princeton I played through.

Thanks, Stacey

Oops,

It looks as if the 8240 was never exported to the USA or something. I can't find none on www.Ebay.com
And even in Germany I find only the one speaker amps (8040). I just don't understand...
In Holland alone I found 10 ads at this very moment. Average price €350.= (shipping not included)! It was quite popular here in 1995.

Meanwhile I saw how many different Princeton amps there are. Quite confusing. So many types: clean, reverb, chorus, black face, silver face, black buttons, red buttons, cheap ones, expensive ones.

Just don't fall for that 1966 blackface it says "all BUT original" which means it isn't. I guess it's a language trick to catch foreigners.
They changed a lot of components ('76 speaker) and the price is very high. Don't get yourself ripped off!

BTW
I'm still that dazzled of so many different Princetons, I'd go for the Power Chorus (BIN $215.=) if I were you. Our other guitar player in the old cover and dance music band I played the bass in has the same and uses it now in a jazz big band. (He plays a tele and a Sigma/Levin).

No confusion possible: there was only one Fender Power Chorus. And that was a good one!

Good luck!

Ginger,

You are correct about the Princeton, there are many different options. The black face Princeton Reverb is the one I am interested in. I am still learning about the originality of one, so I will be very careful when buying. Thanks for the advice, though.

I will look into the Power Chorus as an option as well. By the way Fender is reproducing the Princeton in a new name, called Princeton Recording Pro. It has a few extra options that the diehard Fender people are not liking. Expensive though for this new amp.

PS, the replica fender amps ie, twin, deluxe reverb, super etc etc, do not sound like the originals, due to parts, circuit boards, and many other things, they look nice and they are ok, but, not the real deal. a nice amp i think is the SILVER FACED DELUXE REVERB AMP, but they are getting pricey as well, much better for really small gigs, etc, but not for a band with a kick butt organist and sax man, i know, been there, done that, cheers jazz

If you guys are looking for some vintage amps or guitars check this place out. It's like walking back in time. They have every vintage amp you can think of but the prices are a little high. They are reliable and I visit there often. Never got burned ! Mike http://www.guitarden.com/index_1024x768.html

Well, I just bought new amps and I didn't go for the Princeton Reverb. I bought a Fender Custom Vibroluxe Reverb and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

The Vibrolux is going to be my new main amp and the hot rod is going to a friends house so I will have something when I go there.

I felt the vibrolux gave me what I was looking for with flexability.

Also, for anyone that was a Nantucket fan from the 70's and 80's, Pee Wee Watson played my AS50. He was really impressed with it's playability and sound. Interesting tidbit, I thought.

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, i recently had a blonde one for about a month, it was ok, nothing special, yet a nice package for around $400. i sold it because i didnt like the hissy sound in the back ground and it was a little too heavy to lug around for small gigs, thats why i bought the Peavey Classic 30, and then found a Peavey 1x15 extention cab, cheers
