Hey All,

I'm down here in Austin and I have been looking for an AS-200 for a while. I found this one on Craigslist:

http://austin.craigslist.org/msg/328074225.html

Now, as you can see, it is not in the greatest shape, so the asking price is a bit out of line. My question is how hard would it be to find an original pickup to replace the ES-335 pickup that is supposedly found in the neck position. Also, what would I be able to do with the unsightly extra hole that was drilled into the body?

Thanks!

Ira

It kills me when someone has an AS200 for sale like this. I think people have decided that they've struck gold when they find one of those. Sample AS200 ad: FS 1980 AS200, good condition overall except for some minor wear: caught on fire just for a brief moment, headstock repair(pro repair) in nine different places, brass nut replaced with better sounding graphite, p'ups upgraded to Gibson, no case--keep in a plactic bag to avoid elements, one f-hole cracked fixed w/ super glue, Kris and Paul 4 EVAH carved in back with what looks like could've been a pocket knife--other than that, it's mint--asking $1500 shipped

to address your issues: i think the hole could be fixed, but would still be highly visible--i don't think it would affect the guitar's integrity as far as structure goes

the pickup might be a little harder if you're looking for a period pickup, i don't know if those were super 58s in those, someone with a little more knowledge might help

i'd talk him down though!

I'd offer the guy no more than $900 for it mainly due to the extra hole in the top. A Super 58 pickup of that era should pop up on Ebay, or maybe someone here has one to spare. The Gibson p'up might not sound half bad as is, if it is a Classic 57. To me they sound very close to 58's.

The nicely figured woods on that AS200 are the main reason for my $900 figure. The rest is left to a good repair guy and locating a period correct pickup.

One final consideration is to have the rest of the guitar thoroughly checked out. If the owner did what you see to it, who knows what evil lies within it?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think they had super 70's between 1979 and 1981.

Both my AS200 and AS400 from 80 has Super 70's. One is Jan 1980 and the other is May 1980.

Super 70's is a surprise to me. The 2630 (the AS200 predecessor) has Super 80's and the first generation AS200 also had Super 80's. Then I thought they went to Super 58's. Maybe Super 70's were used for one year in between the Super 80's and Super 58's? I'm doubtful...

I dont think they ever had Super 80's. I had a 79 AS200 before and it also had Super70's....the odd thing I do remember though was that the pick-up covers were really deep...probably an inch deep rather than 5/8". I know they were original cuz they had that tiny NO stamp that Ibanez covers have.

2630 with Super 80's:

As far as the AS200 is concerned, I think the first generation (early '79) was just a 2630 renamed as the AS200 and it still had Super 80's. Then, according to the catalogs, they used Super 70's until 1981 when they switched to Super 58's.
