I recently purchased a JSM100 and the factory setup was way off - very high action and excessive relief. I usually do most of my own work so I set it up using 11s along with modest relief and medium low action. The manual did not provide much information about recommended setups so I was wondering what setups other JSM100 players are using.

Hi 4,

There are stock setup specs, but I would say that ultimately, setup specs should be specific to the player, rather than the guitar. Set it up for your playing style. Do you play lightly or hard? Chords or single notes? Lots of bends? Which parts of the neck? Type of music?

335Clone:

That info is for a trem equipped guitar. Fouronsix's JSM100 is the John Scofield semi-acoustic guitar.

335clone,
I think there is a misunderstanding here:
A JSM (John Scofield Model, successor of the AS200) is not a JEM (Steve Vai's Superstrat), and shouldn't be setup like a JEM.
The JEM has an Ibanez Low Profile (partly Floyd Rose licensed) tremolo and .011 jazz strings would not be the first option if you'd ask me. You'd need at least one extra spring to keep it down, intonate it all over again etc...

Fouronsix,
The setup for a JSM is quite simple and basically the same as for an ES-335 or AS model.

Like Funkle said, the setup specs should be specific to the player. If you are satisfied with your own setup, keep it that way.

If you for example have difficulty bending the .011 strings and you like bending (for blues solos), then try .010 and perhaps give the truss rod a little more relief. It might sound less loud then, but you can change the height of the pickups a bit to increase the magnetic flux alternation between the vibrating thinner strings and the pickup.

Let your hands (feel) and your ears (sound) be the judge.

Perhaps someone, who's planning to create a thinline JEM? There is already one hole in the body!
Need some coffee too...
