is it the real deal?
the seller is private, and i've never seen flamed top finish like that on a 70's ibanez gibson rep
maybe it is, because i'd date it as prior to 75, 74

Most of the blond es175 copies had flamed maple tops. I used to have one back in the early 90's. It was made in 1977 and had a nice flamed top just like thatone. Mine had better hardware though. Looks like thatone is an early issue 2355. They had some weird tune-o-matic bridges. Anyways, no doubt it's the real deal.

Tristan,
I've got one too and so has our Sixvsix. Unfortunately he is or at least was missing the pickguard, but because it that we can see the beautiful grain here:
http://members.lycos.nl/ibanez2355site/pics.htm
Mine is from 1976 with an ebony bridge. I bought it from a luthier in 2003. I Fell in love right away. I bought it on hp, because I had just blown my cylinder head gasket. I just had to have it anyhow.
It was also issued under the name Bradley:
http://cgi.ebay.com/70s-GIBSON-ES-175-ES175-LAWSUIT-IBANEZ-BRADLEY-BLONDE_W0QQit emZ140003994690QQihZ004QQcategoryZ118991QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
the new owner is one of us (Phatphred).
The prices for the 2355m under the Ibanez brand are higher.
I am following this auction to see how much it is going to make. I guess about €900 or €1,000.= but sometimes you don't know. But now it has the attention of all ICW, it could fly high.
The highest listprice I know of, is found on Argus (France/Switzerland):
http://www.guitareelectrique.com/argus_iba.html

Compare 2355 and 2355M!
So natural flame maples are considered more valuable.
I agree on that. It's all selected wood. You never know what's under the dark pieces of a sunburst.

BTW, I read the 2355 sunburst has a spruce top instead of maple. Are there owners who can confirm this? And if so, is it really solid?
(because if so, it would be an L-4CES copy instead of an ES-175, and if that would be the case the ultimate solid spruce top 2355 would be a natural. Was it ever made?)

Anyway:
Good luck bidding, may the best man win!

Oh, and if there are misunderstandings in the communication: I'm a sworn translator of the German language. Just ask.

Yes SPRUCE 2355, my ice tea sunburst has a spruce lam top, very visible grain, again tulip headstock, no serial number, no sticker, ibanez metal tuneomatic type bridge, jazzz

Ibanez didn't have any serial numbers until 1976 (or there around). They started producing the 2355 in 1972. One attempt of dating a pre serial number guitar could be to get the stamped serial number off of one of the humbuckers. Or maybe the pots...?
My current 2355 is a pre-serial number and it's a tobacco burst laminate spruce top. As mentioned earlier, I used to have a blonde 2355m but after doing a side by side comparison with my current 2355 I had no doubt that I preferred both the sound and playability of the 2355.

There could be all kinds of reasons for sound differences, Aroee.
- did they have the same bridge type?
- did you use the same strings?
- did they have the same pickups?
- did these pickups have the same resistance?
- were the pots + capacitors of both the same and in good condition?
- did you use the same pole pieces to string distances?
- did they have the same tuners? (the original tuners of the 2355M are rather cheap and I read of 2355 guitars with star tuners, which are indeed better).

Laminated maple is no problem for the electric sound of the Gibson ES-175, so why would it be on the 2355m?
A lot of top jazz guitarist prefer the ES-175 over the L-4CES, because a good resonating top causes feedback when you play plugged.
I tend to say: laminate is laminate and the upper layer is only of cosmetic importance.
But that's intuitive, or as we call it "horse sense".

Playability is mainly a matter of: neck, bridge and nut (assuming the frets are still good on both guitars).

It is very dangerous to generalize a comparison between ONE 2355 and ONE 2355M, though I have no doubt you heard what you heard.
But with other setups on the same guitars or comparing two other guitars of the same type you could find just the opposite.

If you would compare ONE blond girl with ONE dark haired girl...
what would you know about the correlation between hair color and...
let's say the size of her feet?
(just kidding)

But if nothing worked to improve the sound and playability of YOUR 2355M you made the right choice (in YOUR particular situation).

When I talk about the value differences I can refer to the material and the list prices when they were new: DM689.= for the sunburst select spruce and DM763.= for the 2355M flame maple in 1974. So the 2355M was originally 10.7% more expensive.

And then there is the matter of rarity: what was sold less (the more expensive one) gets more rarity value, because of which the value difference can become more than the original 10.7%! On the Argus list we see a difference of 15.17%!

But that's talking collectors value, not players value. And I think a lot of these beautiful flame maple guitars were played very little. They're often like new. (NOS or closet condition). And an instrument has to be played, it must vibrate, get loosened up. So you might be right on which are the best players.

I wonder who's going to loosen up this old spinster.

Greetz,

Ginger

Thrilling last minutes.
The first bids were insulting.
So, Harry and I went for it.
Then two real fanatics stepped in.
They did this guitar the honour it deserves:
€1110.- or about $1409.70

All it seems to need is a selector switch cap (€1.20 retail).

Russel: this one's for the database $1410.-!

BTW
I'm still a happy man, because I have it all on my 1976 guitar exept for the headstock.

Hell, I almost had it. I got my 1100$ outbid.
I thought it would be a nice addition to my '92 AS200..

It shure would, Tristan.
But don't cry.
There are more fish in the sea.
Jazzzbo is offering his 2355 sunburst pre-lawsuit, because he wants to buy a good AS type (120, 180 or 200).
Perhaps you can make each other happy.

Good luck,

Ginger

Sure, the last thing I'd consider is parting with that AS200, it does everything, really. so versatile.
But if you want to sell, Jazzzbo you might want to contact me, if you like.
I won't mind seeing a picture or two aswell

You understood me wrong, Tristan.
Jazzzbo wants to sell his 2355 first and take some time to close a good deal on an AS type.
For example: If he decides to buy an AS120 he'll have some money left for other stuff.

He was only THINKING of trading because he doesn't like Ebay.

But selling to a fellow member is no problem.

Have you seen this one?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260030932928
The man is talking pure nonsense!
First he removes all original hardware,
adds a bunch of kitsch parts
offers it like a lady with wrong make-up
which you can wash off.
(Original parts are in the case)
If presented well, he could have sold this guitar for twice this amount of money, without the golden parts.
Tasteless!

Love the upsidedown tuners. Was there even a such thing as a hologram in 1978 ? I don't think that Ibanez was using them that early....I think that this guitar sold so inexpensively because of the bull that the seller was slinging !

Hi all!

Yes....the last minutes of the auction were thrilling indeed. Selling price $1410....
Just two minutes before auction end Ginger and I were busy rope-pulling around 600 euro......then in the final seconds suddenly the biddings got almost doubled.
Lot of money, but hey....I hardly saw a 2355M with a striping that beautiful. It was an awesome looking guitar!
Waiting for another opportunity and an equally striking beauty ....

Kind greetz,
Harry

Hi all again

I've been thinking:
I found it somewhat inconvenient that Ginger and I were bidding against each other on that beautiful 2355M. Reading this thread I found out that Tristan was the first of our family to bid (and show interest), so I was a compatitor for one of our "family members" also, without knowing it.
Problem: how do we know that us Ibanez addicts are bidding against each other, since we don't know each other's user names at Ebay.
I think that bidding on an item when already someone of us is at it is simply "not done". Above that: why would we complain about rising prices on Ibanez vintage guitars when we make the prices that high by bidding against each other?
Could we simply think of a system whereby we add "ICW" to our Ebay user names, so that we immediately can see that one of our "family" is seriously interested in the offered item? We could have contact off-line in order to inform each other about the maximum price we had in mind. In case of "number one"'s maximum bid gets overbid by a stranger, "number two" could take over etc.
Just a thought.....

Kind greetz,
Harry

Was sich liebt, das neckt sich!

Guys,
You have a common interest.
J wants to sell or trade, T is interested in buying not in trading. So find an agreement on the price.

Tristan,
Don't feel insulted because you didn't get an answer on your e-mail yet. There can be thousands of reasons for that. You picked one of the worst reasons you could think of, may be because you were outbid last night. Sh.. happens, man. Tomorrow's another day.

I was pretty negative last weekend, because they stole my bike... but that's Holland.

If JAZZZ says your mail got blocked by a SPAM filter, I have no reason to doubt that, especially with the elaforge in the address. I guess most spam filters also block CaptainKirk@enterprise.com , BonesMcCoy@sickbay , Picard@thebarbershop, Scottybeammeup@engineroom and the rest of the crew.

And my experience with spam filters is, that some SPAM slips through and some serious messages don't. So they are often a waste of money.
Especially f... Norton.
I used Mc Affee SPAM KILLER for a while, but for the past two years I've selected my mail manually.
I've thrown away about 5,500 SPAM mails in two years. I perfectly understand that people use filters. It's pretty annoying.

Now, shake hands and get to business.

Ginger
