Hi everyone!I need some advice.My Am 255 has frets that are approx 60% of orig height.They are well dressed but feel too low for easy bends etc.I love the guitar.It's in great shape except for a few finish cracks around the input jack.
Am I messing up the guitar's value
by 1)refretting , and
2)using jumbo wire (bigger than original)? |

If the frets are replaced by a competent luthier or repair person, I wound think it help the guitar to hold it's value. I would rather buy a used guitar newly refretted than with old, worn out frets. Also, my personal preference is jumbo wire but that's me. Not everyone is going to feel the same.
My comments are based on my preference to find a good playing guitar and less on what constitutes a collector's item. I'm guessing but I suspect a collector would value unplayed and original over worn out or replaced...but that's a guess. |

As long as you don't do anything radical, like removing binding tabs (there shouldn't be any on your AM255), you should not be affecting the value of your AM255 by refretting it.
If it were a more collectible guitar and not intended to be a played anymore, like David Gilmour's #001 1954 Strat, then I'd certainly leave it alone. |
