"This was one of the first of these models made, back in about 1977." If someone takes the effort of photographing the serial number, why can't he take the effort to READ IT? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120033279409 September 1978 Pity about the pickguard... Is the out-gassing of a tortoise pickguard a common problem? The original PUs are in the case pocket. Why? Where is the original pickguard now? He could also have sold it seperately. Ginger |

New pickups because the outgassing was soooo bad it really pitted the originals (my guess). And yes outgassing of the tortoise colored guards is real common, not merely on Ibanez either... Gibson archtops with tortoise or the real fancy marbled guards have that problem. The guitars stayed stored in their cases and the pickguards start to decompose - the gasses typicalling pit anything plated first, they also can cause the case lining especially close to the pickguard to do fall apart. I had an Ibanez Byrdland that was like that, case and plating all messed up... It's why a lot of great guitars now sport black and white layered pickguards, no more tortoise... |

And from my own experiences with an early release GB10 that I got on consignment, the pickguard on mine was not only decomposing but really warped. And with GBs that is bad because the bridge pickup is attached to it, so if it's warped AND decomposed it's useless if you want the pickup aligned right with the strings... Just experience talking here... The other day I saw a great (normal scale length) Ibanez Byrdland copy for sale - with a really gorgeous striped ebony pickguard. Replaced tailpiece too... Bet it had the same degassing problem. Lovely axe... BIG |

My GB10 pickguard deterioration experience is just as Bigmike says. |

So, I'd better take my AS120 with the added tortoise pickguard out of its case and put it in a stand, then (or put the original black one back on). Thanks for the warning, guys. Ginger |
