I have an AS73 & AK85. I would like to change out the electronics in both of them. First, I have a set of GFS Nahvilles. I also want to get a set of the Mean 90's. Which guitar would each work the best in?
Next, I know Gibson used to use 300k pots. Would they be a better choice? should I get long shafts?
Lastly, what about the pup toggle switch, which one?
I want to get all the materials BEFORE I start this so I can do all at once.
Any info is appreciated.

I just switched electronics on my AK85. Bought and installed CTS 500K pots, regular shafts; Switchcraft toggle switch (big improvement) and new input jack. Also added DiMarzio Virtual PAF (neck only), which seems very clean and smooth. So far, so good. I'm happy with the changes.

Hey Phat! Don't know the model number of the Switchcraft but my guitar tech said it's the one that Gibson uses on their upper end guitars. There seems to be some "controversy" on whether to go with 250k pots or 500k. 500ks have a little more brightness and volume apparently; 250k's are a tad duller and less volume. But we're talking minute differences here. I don't think when playing live you could really tell a difference. My 500's sound pretty darn good...it's more about the pickups and amps anyhow, not the pots. Good luck on your project Phat!

Phatboy,

It's straight...three-way black toggle switch. Are you looking at one on-line?

Actually, I can't say with 100% certainty it's straight without opening it up, but I'd be 98% certain it is. The Ibanez website (under parts) shows a stock straight togle switch. I know Switchcraft makes straight and right-angled switches. You could just call your local knowledgeable luthier or someone like Allparts and they'll know what you need. Or just pull out your stock switch and check it out. But you already know this so I'm not sure why I'm writing all this ;-)....Good luck!

What would be the better match - AK85 with Nashvilles or Mean 90s or?
The same with AS73?
It *seems* it could go either way..........
