OK, I know this might upset some of my purist (never modify vintage guitar) friends out there...but back in 2000 I changed out the Super 80's and Gibralter bridge on my trusty old 2630. Since then she's had Super 58's and Gibralter II setup with the coil tap remaining for the bridge p'up. Intonation is greatly improved and the warm PAF tone of the 58's work great in this semi. It was my pre-Scofield/AS200 mod done because of the terrible corrosion caused by the old pickguard to most of the metal parts. Plus I never liked the pointy edges of the original rectangle shaped Gibralter bridge. The tech was luthier/builder, John Jordan of No. California who said the mod was a challenge due to the different mounting posts and hardware. But he did a beautiful job in my opinion. I've been meaning to post this topic and take photo for a few years now.

As a player I can totally understand why you did this. Of all non tremolo bridges the Gibraltar II is the best ever made IMO. You can adjust not only the intonation but also the individual saddle heights. And it is beautiful and smooth. A wonderful piece of metal craftsmanship. But there is another (collector's) side to this medal, which I don't have to explain. So I won't. Technically it's an absolute improvement, so play on! Ginger |

Ginger~ I agree with your comments about the functional beauty of the GII bridge. As far as keeping it original, I guess I've always been more of a player than collector. Plus, after playing crappy guitars for too many years, this was my first really nice instrument...and first Ibanez. She isn't going anywhere! |
