Asking price is 1400€.
Headstock has been broken and repaired, schratches around, non original pickguard, frets worn out, etc

I offered 400.- (too much?) via email, no reply.

Too much? Not if the repair was done professionally.
A good glue joint is stronger than the wood itself.
Don't know about the frets.

I don't like repaired headstocks, and most people don't. So it's difficult to sell. You could be lucky. The owner has a higher price in mind. Let him sweat, he's the one with the problem. You still have the money in your pocket.

I think €700.- is the maximum IF no refret is necessary. IF a fretjob/refret is required, you shouldn't pay more than €450-550.

"Too much? Not if the repair was done professionally."
Did you look at the pictures? Perhaps the repair is good enough for playing but in my eyes it doesn't look like professional. The seller says it needs refret but is playable as it is.
He replied my email and was surprised (pretended?) because of my low offer. Obviously he doesn't know how much professional full repair would cost. He remembered that refret has cost 900FIM (~150€) in the past. Then there are scratches, almost loose output jack, not genuine pickguard, ugly repair marks on the headstock etc. I tried to tell him how the prices are determined on the market.

I looked up some prices in November 2006 and just found them back in an old thread.

-----------------------------------------------

"Well, about a possible refret job. I never did that and I will always try to avoid it. So I try not to buy guitars with bad frets.
As you might know, I have two luthiers in my circle of acquaintances, who taught me a lot and do the realy special jobs for me. Of course I get some discount, but they've got to make a living too. Refret jobs normally are between €120.- and €250.- depending on: is there a neck binding or not, unfinished rosewood, ebony, wenge or pao ferro, or finished maple.

On my neck through natural Jarock Strat (no thruss rod) I put .011-.049 strings to avoid a refret job. I bought it for €60.- and upgraded it with about €200.- of gold and tortoise parts (like the Mexican Superstrat). So if you have a string buzz problem you could try to solve it with heavier strings and adjusting the truss rod.
Instead of a total refret, there are also other fret jobs, which are much cheaper.
A few Dutch examples from the web:
http://www.gitaarservice.nl/subhome/reparaties.htm l

http://www.fernsguitars.nl/repairs_nl.html

http://www.heeresguitars.nl/faq/reparaties_2005.pd f

http://www.rikkersgitaarbouw.nl/reparatieprijzen.h tm

As you see Fern has one standard price for refretting. The others ask extra money for binding and maple. I met him this summer on a new guitar event in Valkenswaard. A nice young fellow with an official woodworkers and instrument builders diploma. He had brought some of his work. Really nice. Certainly deserves a chance on the market.
I admire it when youngsters choose this profession, because it takes guts. It's pure idealism, not a fast career move."

---------------------------------------------

Oh yeah, Sven aka Funkle recommends a PLEK fret job. Which is even more expensive.

About the headstock repair: you don't know how bad it was. Camouflaging the repair is more expensive that the technical repair itself. And if the seller honestly mentions the repair, would you pay the extra cost. Headstock break means: player! Unless the instrument is extremely rare, which it isn't.

But as I said: let him sweat!

Juha:

This one looks like a Sept. 1980 AS100. Changed pickups, tailpiece and an added coil tap switch. These are great playing guitars, but with all the "unoriginal" parts and added switch, it hardly seems like "a collectors guitar".

Seller wrote: The serial number is "1805246"
That's bull of course: should be I805246.

The tailpiece seems to be a Gibson TP6.
You can use it or sell it for a good price to a Gibson player/collector if you have an original Ibanez tailpiece. Technically there's nothing wrong with it of course (made by Schaller, Germany).

I bought this AS200 you laughed for. Have to say quite seldom meet a seller to be so honest with descriptions and pictures took against light with zooming with long exposure shows even finest marks and dust particles. For 27 years of age guitar fret wear is not bad and overall the guitars always wear marks - they are for playing and not for keeping in cases.
Finally I'm happy owner of Ibanez hollowbody I've been looking for ebay quite a long time. More on that Scofield is my famous player to be very pleasant to have a same model.

Hannu:

How much money are you ready to pay for the repairs needed? Total price will be...? If you got what you wanted, congratulations. Remember that I made the price go down from the ridiculous 1400,-. I am looking for player's guitars, but I don't mind if I get a collectable one. I'd rather pay 1800€ (cash sale discount) for a new Scofield model than 750 + repairs for this AS200. For a near mint AS200 I could consider paying up to 60% of JSM100's list price, that is ~1200 - 1300.

Happy owner of two Ibanez semi hollows

I totally agree.
I think MIJ AS guitars are great instruments,
I had a 200 and a 180, I sold both in favor of my pursuit for hollow body guitars :-)

Forgot from my previous post:

Playing a guitar doesn't (necessarily :-)) mean broken headstock, dents and scratches all over, loose output jack (typical flaw of AS200?, see an other thread) etc .
Fretwear is normal but refret costs money.

Fretwear is not needed but loose output jack has to repair somehow. I've noticed already that it is not unusual for these guitars. Have to discuss with luthier too.

Thanks Juha, there is also another web site I use to get detailed information what luthier can do: www.frets.com. There is also pictured stories for repairs. That helped me some time ago when I took my acoustic guitar with adjustable bridge to local luthier to be upgraded. These kind of pages are really instructive for non-professionals.

It seems that jack plug has eaten a wood so that plug hole has get larger. Scofield like fix could be one option. Lacquer damage is luckily only 1-2 mm around the plug but will get bigger if no fix is done.

Hannu,

You'll have to wait untill your luthier probes it. Didn't you see what Scofield's luthier found out? Maybe the whole body is rotten. Just teasing you. Let's hope you get a good player at reasonable cost.
