hello to all,

I have a 100W Hiwatt combo amp that i want to hook up to a cab, now ive checked the net extensively and got bits of info here and there,

can someone confir this info for me so i dont blow my amp.

My amp powers 100W into 8ohm speakers, I understand that the cab must be able to handle 100W at least, the cab i am looking at is rated at 400W power through 8ohm. Would it just be a simple case of connecting the cab to my combo through the 8ohm jack or is there a danger of overloading my amp?

any help will be much appreciated
thanks

But seriously folks.

Sounds like you have 2x16 ohm speakers wired in parallel inside you combo.

What cab are you looking at then? If you've already seen one, what are the speaker ohmages and power ratings on them?

If you ain't got a cab in mind:

A 4x12 would be great for your Hiwatt but is big and heavy and won't fit in the car.

A 2x12 cab with 2x75w 16 ohm speakers would be ok.

hi Six

thats right, i have 2x16ohm speakers in parallel in the combo,

the cab is also a hiwatt 4x12 cab with 8ohm speakers wired in series parallel, im not certain but i think the power rating on each speaker is 100W.

I initially started lookng for 2x12 for the above reasons you mentioned but i cant find any here, availability is a real problem (south africa). they said they could fly in a marshall 2x12 for 3 times the price of the Hiwatt cab

no hang on, my mistake, wrong amp, the hiwatt cobo has a single speaker at 8ohm, the 2x16ohm in parallel is a laney

the rest of the info is accurate

Guido,

Cab's power rating means the maximum power it can stand. You can't overload a 100W amp by connecting it to a 400W cab, if you follow the resistance (impedance) instruction of your amp. Looks like your combo has output jack for connecting external speakers. If it has, just check that the cab's impedance printed on its rating plate (specifications label) fits in with your combo (8 ohm). You don't have to know or care if the cab has one or more speakers. The rating plate tells the total external impedance and max power values.
After reading your post again I see that you knew all this and your combo is compatible with the cab.
But the only utility you get is better sound quality if the cab has better speaker(s) than your combo and perhaps more volume if the efficiency is better. Max 400W cab doesn't make 100W amp more powerful.

Juha is spot on.

Guido. Now that Juha has sorted the rating problem what kind of sound are you after?

Power rating is one thing. Tone is something else. So knowing or caring how many speakers are in the cab is all part of the equation. Keep in mind that a 4x12 sounds different to a 1x12 and also a 2x12. Vintage 30's sound different to G12H's albeit they are both 30w speakers.

100w 1x12 combos have never been top of my list on tone. IMHO, the more speakers you have with a big amp, the better it sounds. Most 4x12's run 25w or 30w 16ohm speakers wired in series/parallel.

thanks for the help guys,

Six, my amp at the moment has a "hard" and i dont feel the tone is the greatest through one speaker, thats why i was looking for a 2x12, i felt that at the very least i could get a "mellower" sound if you know what i mean.

I understand that it wont make it louder and all of that but it will certainly change the sound and that is what im looking for. A different, almost softer tone. The cab is loaded with fane speakers, so im thinking i'll lug the thing down to the store and give it a whizz.

Tuja, thanks for the help, you are right, my amp has external speaker jacks for 4ohm and 8ohm.

thanks guys
