So lately I've been having some fun with pedals. There are some Do-it-yourself pedal mod kits available on the internet with some really nice instructions. So I bought one... to modify my Blues Driver 2. Monte Allums, the guy who sells the kits, is pretty knowledgeable, and without getting into the details, I think offers a great modification for the money. So anyway, after modifying my BD-2 and having a ton of fun with it and my strat, I thought about some other pedals I might have fun with. So then I picked up a BOSS Compressor/Sustainer CS-3 (pawn shop, 25 bucks) and dropped the Opto mod in it from Monte... more than pleasantly surprised I picked up a DS-1 and did the tri-gain mod (3 way toggle with LEDs on one side, and a diode thing on the other). Well, the stock DS-3 seemed pretty useless to me... but the mod brought some life back into it.. long story short... I took the pedals to my guitar instructors house and we did some a/b/c/d/e testing and came up with the following results. The modded BOSS pedals sounded way better than the stock... no question. But his Tone Freak Abunai 2 pedal was the BEST sounding, and most useful pedal I've heard. Infact, I lusted so badly that I had no problem spending 200 bucks to purchase one and I can honestly say that this is one kick pedal. I'm so enamored by it that I'm considering purchasing a second one just for different settings (it's got a true bypass). Anyway, not to plug Tone Freak's pedal too much, but my jaw dropped when we plugged it in.... it's got thick, creamy, rich distortion... but turn the drive down and set the tone at noon and you got a great blues sound. I suck at describing sound (and describing wine at tastings other than "wow that tastes really good), but trust me when I say this pedal is all that. My Analogman modded Ibanez TS-9 is very different sounding than this pedal. So, do any of you guys have pedal fever? If so, what do you recommend? Also, where in the chain do you put your compressor if you use one? |

I'm still into my Xotic AC Booster for great overdrive with a Strat or Les Paul (and of course Ibanez). Smooth tones no colouration. Also my "Lazy-J" Cruiser is to die for when punching in that solo with no tone colouration. Jesse is based between the US (Myrtle Beach) and Chandler Guitars (Kew Gardens, London, UK) http://verysquare.com/jessehoff/contact.cfm Having fun with my Keeley Compressor too. six |

Six - where do you put your compressor in the chain? Silly question, but I assume the Keeley compressor is dead quiet???? My Boss CS-3 puts a really light touch of noise when the levels are up past 12 oclock, but after the mod, it's much quieter. |

Brent, Initially, I had the comp after the overdrive pedal and my booster. Now I run the Comp on a different loop using one of these: Ebay Item #320114004105 Except my one is a smaller unit. That means I can punch it in when I need it and it doesnt soak up tone when I don't. I have other effects in the other loops. The MC-FX looper helps to keep the signal path natural if you know what I mean. six |

For myself i run the following, in order from guitar input Boss overdrive Boss metal zone Phaser (cannot remember the brand) Boss Digital delay Yamaha FX500 unit - managed with a digitech midi footboard. A lot of footwork needed in some numbers but well worth it for the tone and colouring. |
