I've slaved over my Ibanez for the last time. The ST-50 will be a standard tuning humbucker axe, and perhaps backup. My heart has been contented with a SE Soapbar II, all mahogany, tobacco sunburst. It really makes me wonder why the hell I ever parted with my McCarty Soapbar. Gonna start saving for that now. If you haven't played one of the SE's, you owe it to yourself to. They cannot be beat for the money. |

PRS SE Soapbar II, that was exactly my thought when you started your P-90 modification: why doesn't he buy a PRS SE instead of changing a vintage axe? But I didn't want to temper your enthusiasm for "our" brand. I find your Phat Cat mod a beautiful job BTW. But if you want to sell the ST-50 as an original with its original V-2 pickups, there are still 2 things missing: 2 Super Grip (I) knobs... they're no fun buying, Nigel! Perhaps the wisest decision is indeed to keep it as a backup after all those investments you made. You have an unique and beautifully modified ST. But as I understand now, your PRS SE Soapbar sounds better than the Phat Cat, right? Wish you were in the neighbourhood, then I could HEAR the results of your mod, because it LOOKS GORGEOUS! I'm thinking what might cause the sound difference between your Phat Cat project and your PRS... Is it the neck wood (laminated maple) or the scale length, or, or, or... Selling or keeping? You had the advantage of an affordable good piece of wood. I wouldn't be to quick to throw that away. (But I'm in love with the looks of my ST). It is ideal to test all humbucker sized pickups. Phatcats do well in (semi)hollows but not in solid tops IMNSHO. No P-90 tone at all in solids. In hollows however....... |

I have a few PRS, really like them. In my SAS I have a set of Harmonic Design Z90s and a suhr single coil. Best humbucker replacement pickups I've found with McCarty's have been the Wolftone Legends and Bare Knuckle Emeralds. |

I've been trying to get back to my McCarty's tone forever. What we need is a solid mahogany Studio with a mahogany neck and NO MAPLE ANYWHERE. The Studios, with medium hot (12K) alnico 5 humbuckers (PRS Dragon II's) are great sounding, at bedroom levels. Turn it up, and it's just too bright, even with 333K volumes + tones. I'm going to keep the modded ST for now as a backup, ONE HELL OF A BACKUP! Soapbar does sound better than the Phat Cat, and they are different (A5 vs. A2). "Wish you were in the neighbourhood, then I could HEAR the results of your mod, because it LOOKS GORGEOUS!" Hopefully, we'll tour Europe soon. "I'm thinking what might cause the sound difference between your Phat Cat project and your PRS... Is it the neck wood (laminated maple) or the scale length, or, or, or..." Neck wood, scale length, bridge (wrap around vs. brass tune-o-matic), pickups, and weight. The PRS is featherlight. "You had the advantage of an affordable good piece of wood. I wouldn't be to quick to throw that away. (But I'm in love with the looks of my ST). It is ideal to test all humbucker sized pickups." Yeah, watch out for those coverless cream antiquities. They look just like V-2's!! OMG. I must switch the A2 mags for the V2's aged A5's. Whoa... |

Nobody can convince me that wood has "much "to do w/ guitar tone as much as the pickups do on an electric guitar. To be totally honest its all in your head. But i do say the guitar manufactures have done a pretty good job of brain washing most of you !!How many guitar manufactures have documented test results- showing that diffent types of wood will increase(over 50%) the tonal quality over another type of wood? You are lucky to see a 2% increase***** Im not talking Acoustic guitars- Im talking strickly electric. If you took a piece of plastic and molded it in the shape of a hollowbody guitar same weight(an exact copy) i would be very surprised if you would hear much difference in tone.I bet some of you would say over 50% hahahaha |

The PRS is very light, I'd say 6 lbs, but I don't have a scale. It's probably that light due to the wood being baked, thus reducing water weight. This improves resonance. Wood does play a big role in shaping tone, Fingersmcoy. Go try a PRS SE Soapbar II, then try one with the Maple cap. BIG DIFFERENCE even when sampled acoustically. The wood, scale, nut, bridge and strings generate the PRIMARY tone. The pickups and electronics work with that to generate the SECONDARY tone. |

Guys: As the conversation has moved completely away from Ibanez guitars, can you carry on this discussion of PRS to the Miscellaneous or Players Lounge section? JohnS SysOp

The PRS is Korean made. The pickups feel overwound, which I'm led to believe by the way it compresses notes. Lollar P90's will fix that for sure. Can't wait! |

Nigel: Please, explain "It's probably that light due to the wood being baked, thus reducing water weight. This improves resonance." Does this make a guitar better (or worse)? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resonance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_resonance Juha |

This makes it better. Wet, heavy wood does not acoustically resonate as well as dryer wood. You ever tried to talk under water? Get the picture? |

Hm, have you ever heard any decent manufacturer of wooden string instruments uses wood that is not dehumidified/dried? "Baking" only makes the process last less time and is used in factories for mass production. So, any wood used for factory made guitars is "baked". "talk under water" has nothing to do with resonance of string instruments (play guitar under water?). I recommend you read the Wikipedia articles above and follow the links to acoustics, wave motion etc. Juha |

I've had many chances to buy PRS. I finally took a double cut McCarty goldtop with p90's in a trade. Not a scratch on it. Beautiful axe. I was terrified of playing the thing risk chipping it so I sold it pronto. PRS - Personally I see them as a Yuppi's guitars. Nice guitars bought by solicitors/accountants/doctors who secretly keep them tucked under the bed in the spare room away from the wife. They treat themselves to a strum now and then ending in a hour long polishing session before going back in the case for another 6 months. Saying that, I tinkered with a very nice 1988 24 fret 10 top the other day that was scratched and chipped to buggery. Not for sale unfortunately. six |

Going to replace the pickups. Stockers compress the notes too much. Anyone got experience with Lollar's or Fralins? |

Lollar P90's are supposed to be the bee's knees! Florida's Jay Wolfe's Guitars has them installed in all of his custom Heritage P90-equipped models. Plus Lollar will work with you to get just the right pickup wind for your desired tone. Heard good things about Fralins also. Basically you can't go wrong with either maker. |
