Anybody here play a Tele?I've been after a old Ibanez model for years but never had any luck.I was able to score a good deal on a '99 standard a few weeks ago though. It came with a Seymour Duncan "little 59" in the bridge.I've never been much of a Duncan user but I really like this one.I like the way it plays with the neck pup too. Being my first Tele I'm not "in the know" about alot of other choices out there so any other Tele players, feel free to fill me in. I've been caught up in other things so I probably have less than an hour playing time on it right now but this week I plan on running her through all of my rigs and try to match her up. |

Hi Chris, I've been playing my Tele alot lately in the band. Its a 1994 Japanese Fender 50's reissue. I've swapped the pickups out for a nice set of Fender American Vintage. This made a big difference. The secret to true Tele tone is to make sure your bridge is made of a ferrous material (magnetic) and that the bridge pickup uses a copper bass plate. You will not get the TWANG any other way. I have also had a hot rod pinstriper do some work in the original Von Dutch style. Here's a picture: Cheers, Mark |

Hey Mark, Thanks for the tips. The bridge is ferrous but rather generic I'm sure and also a little too "modern" for my taste.I'd like to find a vintage or vintage style three saddle bridge to replace it with.Any old Tele I've played that had the 3 saddle set up just seemed to have that "something extra" if you know what I mean. I just need to research my options out there.I'm sure there are some nice current quality choices. Switching out the pots,cap,switch,etc...is on the to do list also. As for that Seymour Little 59,I really like it and it sounds great through the Marshalls, but I don't see using this guitar too much on the heavier side of things so I'm thinking of pulling it and trying out a Dimarzio Twang King or something more traditional. And that Tele of yours is stylin'!!! |

Ccs~I just got into Teles a few years ago. Man, what I've been missing all these years! They are spanky, twangy, cranky, and warm all at the same time. My preferred Tele is the G&L 'ASAT'line, designed by Leo Fender and George Fullerton. To me they represent their best work after leaving Fender. These are US made and go for reasonable prices on the used market. Currently I'm spankin' on an ASAT Blues Boy (for Tele and a great faux 335 tone), ASAT Special and ASAT Classic. Spankalicious! |

Guitartim, What kind of pickups are in the Special? They look kind of P-90ish.I see the Blues Boy comes with a Seth in the neck, that's cool. Sixvsix, what pickups are you running in yours? |

Ccs~The ASAT Special comes with G&L's patented MFD single coil soapbars. (Magnetic Field Design). Here is the description from the G&L forum site: "These pickups have given G&L its enviable reputation for great tone. The soapbars have higher output than the Strat style MFDs and are "ballsy". They have more midrange than Gibson P-90 alnico soapbars while reproducing the P-90's well-known harmonic complexity. They are great for cutting through a mix. The bass response is strong and well focused. In the neck position, the soapbar MFD produces fine blues tone. In the bridge position, it has excellent spank and clarity for lead work."

I am in the process of building my own tele from various parts. Does anyone have any ideas as far as p/ups. Fralin, Barden, DiMarzio, Suhr??? I can't figure it out. I kind of like the virtual tele from DiMarzio. Let's have some advice. |

Here's the tele in my collection. I've been playing this one almost exclusively since I purchased it a few months back. It's got the funk.

GUYS, I have a '67 Fender Tele, butterscotch, maple neck & board. As of late when I get the urge I play one of my G&L A.S.A.T. (Telecasters). The neck has serious birdseye that's been rubbed with gun oil and then clear finish. BLUES |

Blues~ Very sweet ASAT Classic! Looks a lot like my Bluesboy. G&L's are very addictive Tele-gits. Pull your '67 Tele out of the vault and show us a picture when you get a chance. |

Guitarim: I'm not giving it back! Although Prince can really make her sing. That guy is a master! I have some bootlegs of him that display his amazing talent on the guitar. He really has done his homework. I can't help but boast. Here's the back. I tried to capture the flames but the pictures don't do it justice.

I got me an '04 MIM Standard Tele last weekend and I'm in heaven with it. Tried all the US and Jap models I could find here in Sydney, quite a few around too - both new and old, but none turned me on. Then came across the Mex, which played and sounded exactly like I thought a Tele should, and the owner was happy to swap for my '06 MIM Standard Strat. Didn't stop playing it until yesterday when I rediscovered my Flying V after putting some Rio Grande BBQs in it - thanks Hackneyslim! |

Ccs, The Tele came to me with US pickups (I'm assuming they're standard Fender Tele pups), as far as I know that's the only mod done. I don't plan on changing anything else as it is perfect for me as is. The guy who I got it from reckons he tried a lot of Mex teles before finding this one though, so this prolly isn't a typical representation of MIM stock. I believe the newer MIM Tele's have better sheilding (maybe this is just to compensate the stock pups?) and jumbo frets - I prefer vintage frets so I don't consider that to be an upgrade. The only thing I'm looking to change is the control plate - dang volume knob is too close to the selector switch and inhibits on-the-fly switching from the bridge position; plenty of real estate for the volume knob to slide over a couple of cm too. And to think, Fender have only had 50+ years to fix this glaring design flaw... |
