In another thread, bcrichbich posted the question: I would be really interested in peoples experiences, what inspired you to pick it up in the first place and what drove you to perservere. Why did you choose Ibanez as your guitar? include your circa and interests... whatever. Just makes me feel like I know you guys a little better. |

I played (attempted to play is more like it) when I was a teenager, inspired by the Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zep etc.- . I never got very good, and stopped when I was in college. During my college years I had gotten really into fusion. It was Jeff Beck that opened the door for me to bands like Return to Forever, Mahavishnu, Holdsworth and Jean Luc Ponty. I had a few false starts through the '90s, picking up the guitar again for short periods. Then in April, 2001, I bought my dream guitar, an S470 and have played nearly every day since then. I no longer have the S470 (which I traded to MrRoadstar) and I've had lots of Ibanez guitars since then. I've also owned Fenders, and various other brands. I'm a player, not a collector. In the '80s only Gibson and Fender existed in my mind. Then I took notice of Ibanez when I noticed all my heros playing them (endorsements really work!). What really caught my eye was that Ibanez was doing something really creative with their designs, not just rehashing the usual 50 year old designs. Then when I discovered this forum, I learned about Ibanez in the '80s and 70s. And there is also the underdog thing - I think the guy in second place always tries harder. I developed a dislike for bloated "industry leaders" who were content to sit on their laurels. This is part of what has drawn me to Ibanez, and companies like Nikon, Apple and BMW. They have strong vision and standards of quality, and never play follow the leader. They're aiming at a smaller market sector that knows what they want. Ibanez is not the end-all or ultimate to me. I'm really drawn to guitars which are well made, ergonomic and have necks I like. There are lots of options out there, and I'd like to own many of them. But from a bang for the buck perspective, you can't beat Ibanez - I've bought plenty of them for $200-400 that you'd have to spend $1000 more to do better. -Sven |

Well i am a 31 yr old Australian, My roots are metal but i produce dance music as well. I grew up on thrash, Slayer being my fave but the lifestyle I was living at the time led me to clubs and eventually found the psy trance scene. www.philosomatika.com for those who would like to know what psy trance is. i have been involved in the local scene for 10+ yrs playing in various metal bands and playing live psy sets at parties and clubs. i have almost finished an album that looks like being released through Century Media. I have always played BC RICH but recently got burnt on a couple of purchases, the customer support sucked bad and I have been thinking of other brands as a result. Ibanez was my first guitar and thought that I would explore their range. The iceman has always appealed to me but i have never played one. Who knows I could leave here an Ibanez head? Dez. |

My late older brother is the root of it all.He played guitar and in 1976 we went to see Black Oak Arkansas and that was the spark that started it all.Saw Frampton later that year. Then I fell into the whole 70's Kiss frenzy.1978 was probably my most influential year with UFO and Schenker blowing me away,Aerosmith at their peak,AC/DC breaking the States, that VH tone,a lot went on that year. About a year later he died and I got his Ibanez Rocket Roll V(the one that's now black in my gallery)Mt first "real" guitar. I started writing and had a highschool band going soon after and pretty much never looked back until '96. I did the rock/metal thing for half of the 80's and then joined a friends thrash band and became part of the NY thrash scene until about '92.It was a great time and lot's of national exposure,etc... but it just about killed me so I bailed out and went back to a smaller scale rock/metal unit again until '96 when I became a father and I walked away from it all for awhile. I now do tech work and have three projects I'd like to take back out to the local clubs but no more touring. I've posted this before but here's a link to a gallery of my gear and some live shots: my gear |

In 1956 the neighbor from across the street gave me an old guitar. It was cracked along the back, so my father fixed it with ceiling staples. I soon became obsessed with all things guitar. Elvis was new at the time and that was an early influence. The first tune I learned was "The Wayward Wind", a hit at the time. Just before New Years Eve "57"-58" I joined the musician's union. From that time forward I have made my living playing the guitar, it is the only job I have ever had. I am now semi retired and spend most of my time recording. Stu |

Me I started at 10 with a cheap 4 pickup guitar that I borrowed from a friend. I played slide on it with a door hinge pin for a few months. I kept it for 6 months till the friend demanded it back then I talked my parents into buying me my own. That was a Yamaha acoustic. I took off the bronze strings and put some ernie ball super slinkys to ease the finger tip pain. Then I got a Ventura ES335 copy and got serious. My fisrt ibanez experience was a 2342 that Someone brought to a party I was gigging at. Then I bought an Artist acoustic. The rest is a blur but there were a lot of Ibanez' Gibby's Fenders Guilds and others I went through over the years. My influences were Clapton, Mick Taylor, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page and a few others I can't remember now! |
