Can anyone suggest a good product or technique for cleaning and preserving gold-plated hardware? I just picked up a GB-10, and the gold is in fairly good shape, but there is some tarnishing and a residue on the pickup and tailpiece. Thanks, Seth |

Hi Seth Ok, the best thing to do first off is to clean the gold. Zippo Lighter Fluid is the best thing to use. Be brutal with it.. Next thing is to re lacquer the gold parts with a copper and brass lacquer which will protect it from getting dirty in the future.. Spray light coats but enough to cover in one coat. I recommend this for chrome as well because it protects the chrome from sweat.... WARNING DO NOT USE COPPER OR BRASS POLISH......... IT WILL EAT THROUGH THE GOLD VERY QUICKLY.... ONLY USE IF GOLD HAS DISCOLOURED AND THEN ONLY LIGHTLY.... |

Thanks Spiro, I'm going to pick up some Zippo lighter fluid this weekend. Regular guitar polish just doesn't do the trick on gold hardware. As far as the re-lacquering goes, I'm too afraid to attempt it on such a nice guitar. I'm even a little hesitant about taking the whole pickup/pickguard assembly off the GB. |

Seth, I recommend you do lacquer it as you will not have to clean it ever again.. Besides the lacquer is so thin you could just do it without masking the rest of the pickup. takes about 5 minutes to dry per coat... |

Spiro is the Brass and Copper lacquer different from typical clear lacquer you find in the paint section of stores? |

Yes it is. It is much thinner and harder wearing than normal lacquer and does not discolour plating..... The one in Australia is called Incralac and does the best job. I even lacquer new hardware to make it last longer... |

Seth, I've found that lemon oil works very well in rejuvenating gold hardware. It is non-abraisive and tends to lift of hazing and minor corrosion. I also think it will protect your hardware over time because oil is a penetrator and guards against oxidisation. I always wipe down my hardware witha soft dry cloth after playing and give the gold the lemon oil each time I change strings. Since doing this I've noticed no further deterioration. Cheers, Mark |
