I own a late 70's Artist. I don't care much for the sound of the stock pickups. Has anyone had any experience in changing pickups for this guitar specifically. I know this guitar is similar to a les paul, but I feel that every guitar is slightly different creating different tone. So telling me that you have had good experience with a Duncan 59 in the bridge of a 74 Les Paul Custom won't be of much help. I know what sounds good in a Les Paul, thats why I am asking for what sounds good in a Artist.

I put a Duncan '59 in the neck and a Duncan Pearly Gates in the bridge of my AR300. They both sound great, and in my opinion are a welcome improvement in the sound and versatility of the guitar. They sound much richer and more complex than the stock pickups, and work very well in their split-coil configs. Since I changed pickups, the AR300 has become my main axe!

Guts:

Any idea on what the differences (electronically-speaking) are between the Duncans and the stock pups? The stocks would be Super 58s, no?

I have 2 AR300s and really like them both. But after watching/hearing Carlos Santana on Smooth, am jealously wondering if it's my lack of playing ability or the stock pickups. Of course, it MUST be the pups. J

Is there someplace on the web to do research or even buy these Duncans?

thanks.

Hey John,

I can't really speak on what the electronic differences between the pickups are. The Duncan website has more info than I can understand regarding their p/u specs, but I have no idea as to the Ibanez p/u specs. I do know that the Duncan's are not totally enclosed like the Ibanez, and mine do not have cover plates either, which I have heard makes a big difference. I have heard awesome things about the Duncan JB for bridge position, it is supposed to be one of their most versatile. Check out the Duncan website for lots of info:

Also, you can read reviews of all these pickups and more at:

I feel that my investment in these pickups was a great move. They made a great sounding and playing guitar even better. I still can't play like Carlos though!

Ok now this has changed froma a pickup discussion to who's better Carlos Santana or some 17 year old dude. Any a**hole with the skillz and the time can learn ANY guitar part! I bet that that same a**hole couldn't write a riff that good if Satan himself held a gun to his head. The point is: you may be able to play a Carlos Santana riff at 400bpm(I wanna see that!!!!) but that doesn't make you better than him. It's what you write, NOT what you play. And who gives a sh*t anyway?

Q: how many guitarists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: six: one to change the light, and five others to say, "I can do THAT better than him" ;-)

Q; How do you get a guitarist to play quietly?
A: Put a sheet of music in front of him.

If we are talking about replacement-pickups I really recommend the following:

Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck-model for bridge posistion and a Seymour Duncan `59 model for neck position. These pups works miracles on mahogany bodied guitars with maple caps.
The pickups work great together and are very well balanced to each other.

My personnel preference for pickups are Ibanez V1(neck) and V2(bridge). They're usually pretty easy to find (and cheap). My SF470(mahogany) came stock with V1/S2/V2, and I have an RG420(basswood) with a V1/V2 setup as well. I also tried a pair of V2's in one of my Artists(mahogany/maple). They seem to work well in all the different bodies.

The V1 will give you sweet creamy clean stuff and really smooth overdrive tone. The V2 will bark and scream with distortion but can clean up nicely for punchy rhythm work.

My current project guitar is getting an S1/S1/V2 package.

Jorgen,

I can find no mention of a "Jeff Beck" model on the Seymour Duncan website. Were you referring to the "JB Model"?

Cheers
Steve

Its a truly great humbucker that has been around quite a few years now. Highly recommended.

I have an AR120 with V2 pickups that i want to replace with super 70's. I have super 70's on my 76 Les Paul Ibanez and i love the sound. I wondered before i put them on my Artist, whether anyone has experience/comments on the following especially with an Artist -
1) sound of super 70 with cover
2) sound of super 70 without cover
or
1)sound of super 70 with cover & waxed dipped
2)sound of super 70 without cover & waxed dipped

Only condition that i place on the pickup is that it don't squeal like a pig. On my Les Paul, my super 70 is waxed dipped. It feedbacks, but beautifully

cheers tone
