Yes, those are vintage Ibanez bass pups on that bad boy. The rest can be identified as follows: Body, neck (including tuners), bridge from a Kingston bass, circa 1975. Pickups from an Ibanez Les Paul bass (model number escapes me at the moment). Pickguard is handmade by yours truly from Lexan. Electronics are run of the mill stuff you can buy from any online guitar store. Painting on the body done by yours truly. I call it the "ChuckE Top" bass as a play on "ZZ Top". -Chuck |

Cool! What'd you use to paint it, and did you do use clear over it? |

I sanded down the original finish, which was sunburst/laquer (finish was cracked and peeling). Then I coated the whole body with acrylic gesso primer, then sanded again. From there I painted with acrylics, combining desert scenes I got from Live.com image search. That's Monument Valley in the distance, and some sort of catcus in the foreground. The back is just a very dark black to blue burst, hand done. I then coated the whole thing with about four coats of clear laquer (spray on, from the hardware store). I'm wiring it up tonight, though I'll have to wait until the weekend to pick up some strings for it. It also needs a nut. |
