Aside from the occasional snipes (like the 2617 above) Is it me or are the prices getting too high, and the fun wearing off of seeking these beautiful Vintage Ibanez guitars???

Maybe its me, so I am seeking input about this topic from all of my friendly Ibanez Therapists out there:-)

I think there are always deals out there if you can find them. Craigslist, pawn shops, garage sales, etc. Just means we have to look harder to find them. Case in point, the CA that Dave_G just got was given to me for free by a friend for helping him move several years ago. I had no idea it was rare or semi-valuable. The Maxxas I found in Craigslist is another great example of how to find a "bargin". I really only bought it to flip it for more guitar purchases but kind of fell for it after cleaning it up. I just wish I knew more about electric guitars. Keeping up with this forum has been a wealth of knowledge for me. I will likely never be as informed as most of you guys regarding the elctronics, pickups or many of the things you know, but at least I know where to come get answers prior to buying the next real bargin I run across. I don't think the "fun" will ever go away. Ebay may not be the best way to find things unless you are looking at the right time and find a BIN that is too low.

I doubt that 2617 went for $399. The buyer and seller probably settled on a price "off-eBay" which is not posted to avoid additional eBay charges. Done it more than once myself on both ends of the transaction.

I think Craigslist is the best way to go, and I've recently posted on ICW about a nice AS80 (which I almost bought for $400) and a 2619 with a hacked tailstop job (that the guy still has listed for just $520). I've also had recent success on eBay because I'm on the West Coast, while the rest of you (for the most part) are on the East Coast or in Europe. When it's 10PM here, you're all in bed (or should be, anyway). I'm able to grab up decent "Buy-It-Now" deals (like a set of star tuners for just $75). Hope springs eternal, I guess. There are also several pawn shops and thrift stores in my area that I check into now and then.

I've posted this before but... in the last 2 years (and some quite recently) I got...
1983 ar1200av w/case: $1050
1983 AM205: $500 w/case
Pre-1975 Vined Scruggs: $158 w/case
198? (I forget) 2622: $750 w/case
PF12NT (acoustic): $85
1979 MC300: $500 (I think)w/case
1978 MC500: $900 w/case
That's just the Ibanez's.
I got the 2 Viet axes for $70 each as well, and... they both turned out to be exceptional. Especially the flower one that I stuffed all the Gibby guts in. Yes, I invested a few bux in them but still, all turned out well.

so... to me, that ain't so bad as far as deals go and there are probably others that I can't recall right now.
You can find 'em.

I never thought it was "fun" collecting guitars.

Collecting, to me, is a means to an end.

It's a process to obtain what I want.

In and of itself, collecting is a royal pain in the butt.

I spend hours a night and usually an entire afternoon on Saturday or Sunday looking through magazines, making telephone calls, and browsing the web.

I usually end up with nothing but frustration.

Kind of sounds like my social life, now that I think about it....

Well, it's certainly more fun than stepping on a rusty nail.

Right now it is a buyer's market on Ebay, for your anything but bank type of axes. This is from a (poor) informed seller's perspective. This will ultimately help all the marginal brands/types & if/when the economic dynamic changes...some folks will find themselves with some good trading/selling materials. Just IMO. If I could just win the lottery, I could make a million on Ebay. Aaaaargghhh!

I think more people than ever are hanging on to their 70's guitars because prices on the Gibsons and Fenders are on the rise. There are always those odd bargains that we hear about (but never seem to happen to me), but in general there are fewer examples available for sale at any price.
The fun part is is playin the one I got.

Cman... I forgot the IBZ sr480bm Bass I got for $100 with case. Totally totally mint (everything) with all original everything included in the case (hang tags, plastic knob instructing thingy)... everything. I was playin' it last nite. I do make an effort to hunt down good deals though. Every saturday, I'm at the pawn shops when they open at 10 am. I even found a GB10 (I think GB10) for a fellow ICW guy there and he was happy with that deal too. Right now, I know where there's a 2617 that's never even been played. I think they want $1000-$1200 for it. Not bad... considering.

Maybe I am just in a collecting slump. Ebay and the ICW and Gbase and Craigslist have all been good to me. I have found everything I wanted withing 2-3 months of actively pursuing them. The GB20 I just found practically mint condition for under $1500 is a deal IMHO.

I usually pursue players, since I go for the love of these instruments, not the resale aspect, and play the SxxT out of all of them.

I already know what I am looking for next, the RGT320rbb, I dont have to look hard for one though, they are new:-) They are a bit on the high side for what they are, but I guess they are the top of the line.

Thanks for the input everyone,

I still need some non-microphonic 88' or 77's, still no luck.

IMO Ibanez & other quality vintage Japan axes are just starting to appreciate as they should/will. In the past 5 years, vintage USA brands have gone through the roof. "Collectors" have driven these guitars beyond the realm of realistic acquisitions for average players, which is too bad...but what are you gonna do? Worthless pre-CBS Musicmasters are going for 2K? ridiculous. I had a '71 Tele in a rare color that was worth $1800 5 years ago. I just sold it for $4400! How could I not sell it, I got it for $400 5 years ago! Hey, I gotta pay my taxes. I no longer even think about USA-made collector axes, unless I run into one in the flesh. Japan-made axes are the best bargain left out there, commonly found & still undervalued. I'm keeping my Ibanez's, Univox's & Yairi's, and looking for more. In another 5 years they will all be priced beyond my means, and nothing new that plays 1/2 as nice will be available for twice the price. Mark my words. If I could only win the lottery...dang!
