I guess I missed the boat on this but lately I've been looking through old Ibanez catalogs online and I'm noticing one thing.

It appears that when a model is first shown in a catalog, it was actually in production the previous year.

For instance, if I am looking at a 1985 catalog and a new model (ABC) is shown for the first time, I can find several ABC guitars on eBay whose serial numbers are x84yyyy.

Is that always the case?

I'm trying to trace the lineage of certain models and thought the catalogs would be a good source of information, however, actual production dates don't agree with catalog appearances and it's messing me up.

Thanks,

I would assume that models produced for the first time in calendar year 1984 would not show up until the 1985 catalogue, since there is a production lead time for catalogues of several months (especially back in the 1980's, when everything wasn't computerized). I was a production editor back in those days and you'd literally have to assemble hardcopies of all the photos and go through months of scanning, layout, screening, proofing, etc. before you would ever print anything.

Not to speak about the JP20, which had the serial number J80xxxx for many years until they ran out of stock. So the customer was actually buying NOS.
