Chance someone has switched a Gib neck onto some other body because... that headstock certainly does not belong on this axe and I'd even bet $1 that it's a switched neck on there. Gotta be the case. |

I remember such a model from the mid '80s when Gibson was competing with other trem-equipped hair band guitars. Think it's called a Spirit or something like that. I have it in a Gibson Catalog. I also remember seeing a white LP converted to double-cut by (I believe) Strings-N-Things in Memphis in the '70s. It was done for some famous artist, and looked amazingly like an Ibanez Artist. If you notice now, Gibson double-cuts have less rounded cutaways, similar to early LP Specials and Hamer Sunbursts. |

Does anyone remember the USA 'Deans' from the early 80's. They made a Les Paul shaped guitar with a Explorer cutaway and headstock and the Flying V with the split V headstock. Very cool at the time. six |

Dean Caddy, V, Z, ML. They're all still in production, and if I could figure out how to post pics, I'd post up all my crap. |

Thanks for the link Fox. I like the red version. I'll bet these play and sound pretty good. They look like beefy guitars to me. |

This asymmetric headstock combined with this symmetric body shape looks odd. It's an example of aesthetically bad design. A little later they used these necks for the Gibson U2. Now that makes sense aesthetically spoken. Being a Dutchman would call his XPL a "locomokipkachelfantje" ("locomochickenstovephant") (from a Dutch riddle: what runs on steam, lays eggs, gives off heat and has a trunk?") Indecisive design. This must have sold pretty bad, I guess. The ad says: "It has the stock Kahler vibrato and Explorer style headstock." How do we know that? I see no serial number, which I could use as a reference. The seller says it's a 1985. So I wonder it's in any catalogue with a stock Kahler. What's bothering me, is that the top lock was mounted over the truss rod cover. This way you can never adjust the truss rod without removing the top lock thus also without removing the strings. I cannot imagine that Gibson would have made such a stupid mistake. That would be an example of functionally bad design as well. The potmeter knobs on the white one are speed knobs, that's totally different from those black ones with the aluminium top lids. (Not that I find the speed knobs ugly, I like them on this guitar). So I'm really wondering whether it is all stock parts what we see here, or that you would buy a $2100+ modified guitar. What I know for sure, is that it's a rare guitar. I wonder what Dave_G thinks about it. He has owned quite a few rare Gibsons. Ginger |

Not sure about the knobs, but the rest looks stock. Yes, stock Kahler and nut lock. The 2 holes on the back of the headstock are probably from a hex wrench holder. |

I saw an Epiphone model with the Explorer headstock a few months ago. I can't remember what it was called. |
