I always wanted a "Custom" guitar....I've been collecting for over 20 years now and I finally found someone who will help me in my quest. This picture is the project about 1/2 done. This used to be a 1980 Gibson 335S solid guitar...

Hi Dave - Is Doug Rowell doing this for you? I've had his site bookmarked for a couple of years tempted to do something similar. Bob |

Dave, Hello. I would like to see pics of the finished product. Will you please be so kind? And yes, the only word to described that guitar is "Custom." Have you decided what pickups, bridge, tuners, etc. you will install? Are you going to have the headstock customized? I'm curious, are you going to leave the finish natural wood or are you going to have it painted? As beautiful as the natural wood finish is, a good paint job would make it striking, dazzling to the eye. When do you estimate it will be finished? Arney |

Arney, The original guitar was a Gibson "Firebrand" 335s, it had just clearcoat on it and was a very nice slab of mahogony. I have a pair of early '70's gibson logo patent sticker pups and all the original parts to go back into this project, T-O-M bridge & Stop, Gibson/Schaller tuners w/pearl buttons-original harness-I will skip the use of a pickguard. The headstock will be customized with a shield and my initials, the Gibson Logo is already incised into it-as is the case with all"Firebrand" instruments. I think I'll keep it natural, unless Doug advises otherwise. |

Well, its finished and on the way back to me...Check out the pict with the pups and hardware Photoshopped on.....I cant wait to finish this one !...My only decision is to keep to the original Gibson hardware or "Ibanazize" with some NOS stuff I have squirreled away....Any suggestions ? By the way, my wife made Doug put the "Daisy Dukes" on the chick !

Well I got it in my hands now and I am stunned ! One of the reasons that I never really liked the 335s is that the body is very large (Gibsons answer to a solid version of the popular 335 style) I have a couple of these as a couriosity but I really never paid much attention to them..Anyway this carved version is so light and seems small with unlimited access to the high register its awesome. The carving is somewhat delicate-so no shreading-but I think the gold hardware looks great ! Im looking for some opinions here because I have the choice of Silver or Gold at this point. The guitar needs a couple of coats of laquer and she is good to go......

Dave, is the neck pup larger than the bridge pup or is it me? If so I would suggest the same size. Also what do the tuners look like? |

Freak, The pups are the same-its a matched pair of REAL PAF's wrapped in circa 1971 Gibson Embossed covers-I think the flash is making the bridge look bigger..(I have had those PUPs in my goodie box for a long time, pulled 'em from an Electra LP clone of all places..., The tuners are currently the orignal Schaller with the pearl buttons and "Gibson" etched name on the back. One of the reasons why I am debating on the Hardware color is the fact that the original Tuners are chrome-I would be replacing them with gold Schallers of the same vintage (1980) and switching out the pearl buttons-but I would lose the "Gibson" etched name on the back... |
