There is no denying that eBay has become a major international marketplace for Ibanez fans and collectors. Because of this, ICW has made a special effort to make the most of this situation. You may have already noticed the eBay ads and search boxes on some pages of the website. These make viewing Ibanez auction items very accessible to ICW members. When you click on these links and carrying on bidding (and hopefully winning) activity or even signing up for an eBay account, you are also supporting ICW. To further support ICW, we have added something new to the Post Messages area of the board software. It is an automated eBay URL generator, which looks like this: You no longer need to copy the entire eBay URL line from your browser and paste it into the Message text box to create a link back to an eBay auction. Now, the only information you need to copy is the eBay item #. When you are ready to insert the URL into your message, you paste the auction number into the small textbox that is labeled: Enter Item number: and press the Add Ebay! button. Presto! A complete eBay URL is inserted that eBay can identify directly with ICW. Please use this tool to create ALL eBay URLs that you include in your messages. This will help support ICW and keep the lights burning. NOTES: 1. If you don’t see the EBay URL generator on a particular page, press the Preview/Post Message button and it should appear. 2. Make sure you remove any trailing spaces after you paste the eBay item number into the textbox. 3. If you have any problems with this feature please email account@ibanezcollectors.com. Thanks for supporting ICW! JohnS

Thanks Freak. Anybody having a problem with clicking on this link and getting it to work? Right now, I'm on my laptop, using Firefox 1.0.6 and it wouldn't launch until I right-clicked and used the Open Link in a New Tab or Window option. Then it loaded fine. (This could have something to do with Firefox blocking popups with Adblock.) It worked fine using Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator 8. I need more feedback on how different browsers are reacting to these URLs. |

It's interesting the side effects these scripts have. Using Safari on the Mac, the eBay links work fine, but my forms autofill no longer works when posting messages, so I have to enter my username and pass with every post, where in the past, my browser would automatically enter it. Not a big deal, just reporting on the side effects. -Sven |

Boogieknight: So far, this seems to be a "browser" issue, not an OS one. What browser are you using, Internet Explorer or some other? What version #? It's also possible that you have some popup blocking feature turned on. |

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank the many members that have been able to make use of the "ICW-friendly" eBay links. This has proven to be a great asset in supporting ICW. With this in mind, we'd like to introduce something New and Exciting for eBay users! It's called the ICW eBay Link Generator. Basically, it's a way to create ICW-friendly links for ALL your ebay auctions. It's based on the same idea as the "Add Ebay" button that you've seen and used on the Post Messages area of this Discussion Board. The biggest difference is that you can create a page of several eBay items and generate the ICW-freindly URL for each item. Because most browsers allow you to save the generated page, you can reload it in the future to revisit those auction pages. Check it out: http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/ebaylinker.html or use the "Easy eBay link page. Try it Now!" link on the Home Page. Let me know if you have any questions or problems (but please read the Hints and Known Problems, first.) Thanks for supporting ICW, JohnS

I found it useful to right click on the ICW Ebay links and then click on 'open in new window'. That gets around the pop-up blocker. Hope that helps. |

We've recently improved ICW's connectivity to eBay. If you haven't seen it yet, there's a new link on the ICW Home page that makes shopping on eBay even easier. Just click on it to view a whole page of Ibanez related items. Or, you can bookmark the following text link: http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/shop.html Your browser will open a new page that contains all the items you would normally see doing a keyword search for "Ibanez" directly from eBay. The list of auctions is sorted with the "soonest to end" in the next 24 hours, being displayed first. If you'd like to see all items that match the Search keyword, then select the "View all ???? items on eBay" link at the bottom left and you will be taken directly to eBay. The key point to remember is that all bid and "Buy It Now" activity will support ICW by earning commissions through the affiliate program. So, if you've hesitated to "publicize" a cool Ibanez related auction in the forum messages, now you can bid quietly, but still help support ICW by starting your eBay shopping from our new eBay Shopper page. And there's more! Your shopping doesn't have to be confined to Ibanez related items. Simply change the keyword in the upper right corner of the eBay Shopper page, press the Search button and buy those CDs, DVDs, antique cars, toner cartridges, jewelery or whatever else it is that you love to find on eBay. As usual, if you have any problems or questions, just let me know. JohnS

Ebay is really getting pathetic ! I looked at the first page of 195 items....44 of which are obvious scams or connterfeit items....and there are most likely even more that are not so obvious..This is really pathetic..... |

Dave: Yes, it's getting harder to navigate the scams on ebay. Thanks to the community here, we have been educated on how to practice "Safe eBaying". Back to the topic, we have been trying to get this functionality since joining the affiliate program and I'm pretty happy that we finally got this up and running. It's a win-win situation for all. |

John, Any chance of showing the world wide "Antoria" listings in the shop as well as Ibanez please? I'm sure it's worthwhile being as the 70's copies are virtually the same guitars. Of course a few Antoria custom guitars were also made back then. six |

Six: You should be able to type antoria in the Search box and get the ebay listings. I just ried it and only got five auctions. Four were from the UK the other was from China. Unfortunately, two of the auctions were for accordians. Is there something else that you would like to see? |

In a effort to help ICW members make the most of eBay, as a resource to finding Ibanez related items, we've added a new feature to the site. Hopefully, you've already noticed the red and blue links above each Discussion Board page. These links are predefined searches that bring up pages of ebay items that match the category displayed. When you win an auction by using these links, ICW will receive a small commission. Remember, there are NO EXTRA costs incurred by either the buyer or seller. The commission is simply taken from ebay's fees. So, support ICW by using the various links provided to do all your ebay shopping. If you experience any problems, please contact me via email. |

Speaking of supporting ICW, I don't know how many have noticed the ads on the right side of each ICW page. There are two types. The top batch are Ibanez related eBay auctions that will end within a few minutes or hours. Get 'em while you can! Remember that winning an auction that you find by using any of the links provided on ICW does NOT cost anything extra. But it DOES provide ICW with financial support. The second group of ads on the right are "smart" ads served up by Google. They are regenerated with each page and are based on a search of keywords found in the page's content. That's why you might find some pretty weird items listed, among the Ibanez/guitar related ads. These ads generally pay a small amount to ICW simply for clicking on them and browsing the advertiser's site. Of course, they'd love for you to buy something, if at all possible. In that case they generally pay ICW a higher commission. But buying is not necessary! So, supporting ICW is as simple as clicking a link...often BTW, if you have ad blocking software for your web browser, then it's likely that you'll never be able to help support ICW unless you turn off the blocking software. You might be able to tell your software to make the ICW site an exception. JohnS SysOp

Reminder: Some ICW members have been including "plain" ebay URLs that they copy from their browsers into their Discussion Board messages. Although this is easy to do, this does NOT help support ICW. Actually, it's even easier to copy ONLY the auction number from the ebay auction page and then paste it into the "eBay Enter Item number:" textbox and press the "Add Ebay!" button. This process inserts a "special", ICW-friendly link to the original eBay auction page, into the message textbox. For a refresher course, plese refer to the very first message in this thread (http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=17&post=33389#POST33 389) Thanks for continuing to support ICW! I actually like the ebay links for a few reasons. #1 It helps ICW stay up and running. #2 It helps cut through the crap and search for what type of Ibanez guitars I am looking for. Annoying as it may be to some it's helpful to others. As far as spam goes I haven't seen any. Bottom line is that a lot of the 3000 plus members have been enjoying this site free of charge and in turn have complied with Johns requests to help support it by using the add ebay and or cash donation through pay pal. My hats off to those who do so. |

Freak: Yeah that will happen. That's because the words in the red and blue cells are type, not graphics. If you use the browser's ability to scale type (like I do on my laptop) then the type can get too big to fit in the space. I'll mention this to my web guy and see if there's an easy solution. |

Has anybody noticed that the automated eBay Link Generator is now creating very short, descriptive links that look like this: Ebay Item # 000000000000 Just a reminder, if you want to include a link to an eBay auction, please don't paste in "raw" URL that you get in your browser's destination bar. Instead, copy only the auction number from the top left corner of the eBay page, and then paste it into the text box that is just above the compose message text area. Then press the "Add Ebay!" button to insert an "ICW-friendly" link into the message text box. Everybody wins when you use an auto-generated link. First, they are shorter and easy to include in your messages. Second, you help alert other ICW members to great buys on eBay and third, you help support ICW with eBay affiliate commissions. |

John - I'm a little fuzzy on how this works. Do I have to place *all* bids on an item through the ICW/eBay link or only the winning bid? Is the fee earned by ICW restricted to only Ibanez gear purchased through eBay or does ICW earn a fee for *anything* purchased on eBay through the ICW link? Thanks, - Pete |

Pete: Thanks for asking. Here's the story: 1. ICW only gets a commission for WINNING bids. Because ANY bid you place could end up being the winning bid, I'd suggest that you always start your "shopping" by using an ICW-friendly link that is found in a forum message or from a "Search Page" generated at ICW. 2. My understanding is that once you arrive at an auction through an ICW-friendly link and make a bid, all subsequent bids (like when you get out bid) will be connected to your initial ICW-friendly bid. 3. Please note: clicking on a regular ebay page URL (one that starts with "http: // cgi.ebay.com..."), does NOT help contribute to ICW. To overcome this, just put the eBay auction number into the small text box labeled "eBay Enter Item number" and press the "Add eBay!" button. You can then press the "Preview/Post Message" button and view/use the working ICW-friendly link. If, after using the link to go to the eBay auction, you decide you don't want the message/link to be posted on the ICW forum, just press the "Cancel Post" button. 4. ICW will get credit for ANY type of eBay auction or purchase, if you arrive at the auction page via an ICW-friendly link. So, start buying your automobiles, diamonds and other expensive items through ICW's "Search Pages". Do do this go to this page: http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/shop.html The page will be filled with ibanez related auctions. You can change the page contents by typing any keywords into the "Search" text field, in the upper right corner (under the yellow and red arrow). For instance, type over "ibanez" with "diamonds" and press the "Search" button. Click on the auction for the 3 carat diamond and place a winning bid.....please! 5. Another convenient way to search for Ibanez related items and generate an ICW-friendly "search page" is to click on the red and blue rectangles above the forum message pages. The results page will display eBay auctions with Ibanez and the specific keyword (vintage, custom, artist, classic... etc.) in them. I hope this helps. JohnS SysOp

John - I created a dummy post in the test area using an eBay Item #xxxxxxxx. The text generated in the post by clicking the "Add Ebay!" button was: \newurl{http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-1751-297 8-71/1?AID=5463217&PID=1802666&mpre=http%3A//cgi.e bay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3Dxxxxx xxx, Ebay Item #xxxxxxxx} I clicked the generated link in the Preview window and when the browser launched the rover.ebay.com/rover/... address showed briefly but was then replaced by the following: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item =xxxxxxxx The target URL looks like the regular old eBay URL. Did I do something wrong or is that the way it's supposed to work? I'm looking at a couple of upcoming eBay expenditures so I wanted to put them in through ICW if possible. Thanks, - Pete |

The way most referral links work (and I should know because I'm an online marketing expert by day) is that the first link (in this case, the "rover" link) sends you to a server where your click is registered, and then a "cookie" is attached to your browser session, and then you are sent on your way to the place you originally wanted to go. Once you are on the site, everything you do is tracked (welcome to Big Brother) and if you happen to place a winning bid on anything, eBay can track it back to the original referral link. That's the way just about any advertiser link (whether ICW eBay link, Google text ad, or any banner ad) works. -Chuck |
