The best way to do it is... have someone that knows what they're doing do it, unless of course... it's not an axe that you are gonna cry about if things go wrong. However, if you've got a "practice" axe to experiment on and learn what's involved.... is it an acoustic or electric? You really wanna be extra careful with an acoustic. The finish really effects the sound of the acoustic. In any event, it can get messy, even with electrics. I'm no expert but I have mucked about with it. The hard part ain't removing what's on there, it's re-applying the finish. Make sure you have a "safe" place to do the work. Bugs fly into it, even when you think you've got it perfect If you're working out in the garage. Know what I mean? You need a safe place and the temperature has to be correct for the drying process to go well. And you need to choose the right finish to work with. I always used a "stripper" to get the olf finish off, then the lightest sandpaper available. And I used sandpaper grades, going finer and finer incrementally when putting several coats of finish. In between coats, I used finer and finer paper. |

The best thing to do is research it on the internet..while there are many ways to refinish a guitar...there are many more ways to mess it up. This was good advise from Bob; "The best way to do it is... have someone that knows what they're doing do it, unless of course... it's not an axe that you are gonna cry about if things go wrong." |

The simplest refinish is a natural clear coat. You can make a deal with a luthier to spray it when he's doing a bunch of other guitars. Then he can give you some discount. But you'll have to be patient. I made an agreement with a luthier to refinish my maple telecaster neck (not vintage) for €20.- But he's the one who decides when it's going to happen. All I can do, is prepare the neck (sanding, taping etc.) and bring it to his workshop, where it must wait for the right moment. As a custom order these jobs are too expensive for a cheap guitar.
