A late 70's AR300 burl/quilt like finish excellent shape, near mint, missing the pup selector toggle. A beautiful '67 Guild D-40. A classic mahogany back n side dread. (Richie Havens Woodstock) Also in excellent condition. Both guitars with OHSC. Each guitar has an asking price of 1000. Can we be objective here on the ICW? There must be some acoustic players/"appreciators" here. Wish I could afford both but must decide. I need a good strummer more that another electric but damn!!!! Where are you at this week? Electric or acoustic? Chime in. Boo |

Boo: I've never played a '67 Guild, but have heard that they can be sweet. I have lots more experience with the AR300, or if it's burl mahogany it would be an AR305. I haven't heard anybody talk bad about them, either. I guess if you need an acoustic, you gotta go with the Guild. But... |

Boo, Great question. I've been much more of an acoustic player over the last 15 years of my life than an electic player. If you're looking for a great strummer, than you can get a lot of guitar for $1000. For the sound, I'm partial to Taylors. $1000 will get you a nice 300 or 400 series new. I've recently played some AC25 Breedloves that sound fantastic and only run between 600 and 800. For years, my main player was an '85 Ovation Legend cutaway. To this day is has the best action of any acoustic I've ever played. Is it a great "strummer"? probably not. But it would still be my axe of choice for gigs. If I were kicking with friends, I break out the Taylor. Play a lot of guitars. It don't cost anything to play 'em. Pick what you like. Good luck! |

If you want an acoustic strummer you can easily do very well with an Alvarez-Yairi. I have had a number of their acoustics, from one end of the price range to the other. I just sold a beautiful (and I mean BEEEUTIFUL) 1977 Alvarez-Yairi DY90 on eBay last week for $625.00. Solid spruce top, laminated Jacaramda (in other words Brazilian Rosewood) sides and three piece back... ebony fingerboard with abalone inlay on the fingerboard, top, sides and between the backpanels just like a Martin D-45. Amazing guitar. Don't let the fact that it's a laminated back and sides turn you off - they're really great sounding AND durable. I'll attach a couple pics in a minute. You see them on eBay all the time. I prefer the OLDER ones, like mid-70's. I think they are built just a scosh nicer than the new stuff. And as the years progressed the top of the line model numbers got bigger, so the (back then) model numbers now are plainer guitars. Great deals... These are not mass manufactured, they are made one at a time by ONE person. Check them out... |

Boo, In my attempt to be "super helpful" I went out on eBay a-searching for some decent Yairi's. Lo and behold the dealer that bought MY DY90 has it listed at a more "up to date" price. His description is pretty spot on... This is just under your $1000.00 ceiling. It's a VERY sweet guitar - has a KK Pure Western pickup under the saddle... Nice plugged it with a pre-amp in the mix. Good luck in your search for the perfect guitar, no matter what you do. http://www.qksrv.net/click-1802666-10381315?loc=http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI .dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D7359256274 |

Bigmike: Wow, that Alvarez-Yairi is a beauty. I wish you had posted it on the Free Classifieds here. I was very impressed with a used AY I saw at Sam Ash, a few months past. Your's was a lot more impressive to look at. Why did you sell it? |

Johns, I actually have a better Alvarez-Yairi, a DY96. Only made in VERY small quantities and believe it or not it is prettier and it's SOLID Jacaranda, not a laminate. Being I am springing for a 1969 Gibson Super 400 CSN I figured I should thin the herd. I put it on eBay before leaving for work and was gonna post here that it was up for sale, but in 2 hours by the time I got to work this dealer had already done the BuyItNow... Still at what he is asking for it now it is still very reasonable. Alvarez-Yairi does a fantastic job with their laminated back/side gutiars. Really hard to distinguish between the DY90 and DY96 sound although there is a small difference... |

Here's some half assed shots of my DY96, BELIEVE ME the subtletly of the marquetry and inlay are unbelievable. All I can say is WOW...

Thanks a bunch guys. A beautiful A-Y you had Bmike. A buddy of mine has both a 12 and 6 from mid 70's. Very sweet. Jeff I like Taylor's a lot. They have their own sound. I guess a "strummer" may have been too general. I have a great little '69 Favilla all mahogany. Like an O-17 series Martin. An excellent finger picker/delta blues box. But like most small bodied mahogany's they loose it a bit when flat picked/"strummed". Don't need a cannon (D-28) but would like a nice "all around". Hell the nicest I've played lately was the ec341 Tak (Springsteen type). Thanks again guys for the input. Boo |
