Do I dare? I am not a bass player.
Bach's cello suites and other music have been arranged for guitar and (e)bass many times. I have heard some other ebass versions before. Great music and nice to play for a change.

I have been thinking to change guitar for bass - two strings less to control and no chords - easier for my old hands

Sigh, I know that playing bass well is not easier than playing guitar, if one doesn't stay at simple rhythm/accompanying playing.

Yes i agree that bass can be complex, just check out that video.Im thinking on staring w/ 50s music and learning the basic bass riffs, then progress to Getty Lee stuff yeah right!

Patitucci may be playing A bass, there... but that's not playing BASS.

Playing bass is like playing lead, all night long, without anyone listening. They never notice, until you miss something. It's also about dragging a clueless drummer back up or down to tempo and bridging the rhythm to the music.

I went from guitar to bass 20 years ago. It's not as easy as it looks. If you can't handle the rhythm/tempo responsibility... don't even try it.

Playing guitar is like a vacation, now.

Hi all

Letīs get this straight: what this guy is doing is great, but it has nothing to do with bass playing. We have to remember what the function of bass playing is. Many modern bassplayers forget that.
If you want to do stuff thatīs really ment for a melodic instrument, you should not do that on an instrument that basically was ment for accompany.
Back in the early eighties I always said: "What Mark King of Level 42 is doing is truely amazing, but itīs a pity that Level 42 is a band without a bass player". Mark always had this glassy, ringing tone with too much treble and lack of bass. You could easily put an "old fashioned" bassplayer next to Mark King to do the real bass stuff. I sometimes play along with Level 42 songs and add a very basic and LOW bass line to it. Just because I miss something.....
Thatīs why I refuse to play 6, 10 or even 12 string bass guitars. Because that goes way beyond the function of the bass. If you want to do that kind of stuff: grab a guitar!
(you donīt play trumpet stuff on a tuba, do you? Although I admit that it would be amazing to hear that, just as a gimmick)

Good point Jchest! Most bass players are not even recognized. Also you must have a good sense of tempo. So i agree on both points!!

Someone who can handle both the groove of the bass as well as solo as if from a paralell universe is Victor Wooten. He is a true master of the 4 and 5 string bass.

Exactly Harry... a gimmick!

And yes... Vic CAN play... but in your example, Tim, he's just showin' off.
