For the Pat, Jim and Jazz fans:

Ramsey Lewis hosts the Legends of Jazz series on PBS. It's done very well. Ramsey is a pretty good interviewer. He's articulate and asks intelligent questions and then lets the guest talk (rather than the Charlie Rose style of talking over them). I enjoyed listening to Roy Hargrove and Chris Botti (verbally and musically), in the Great Horns episode I watched yesterday.

According to the website, there is an episode featuring Pat and Jim. Pat's playing his blonde PM. I think Jim is playing a Sadowsky. Check out the clips which look very promising. Here's the link:

I haven't found a way to determine when this exact episode will air. If anyone figures that out, let me know.

Johns,
I looked at my TIVO site and I have it setup to record for next Tuesday evening (like in the early AM if I remember). I would suggest you go to TVGUIDE.COM and once there hit the LISTINGS tab and then when the default page comes up enter your ZIP CODE and then the way you get tv (COMCAST, whatever), then Search for Legends of Jazz...

I got you covered anyway... My TIVO has a dvd burner

BigMike:

Are you saying that the episode with Pat and Jim is coming up next week? Or that you are going to record it every week with the hope of catching that episode?

I'll check out the TVGuide.com site.

Thanks for the DVD offer. If I miss the episode, I'll take you up on it.

Pat must have gotten a real deal on striped shirts. Maybe he has them tailor-made for him. :-)

Johns,
I looked it up in TIVO and it's on next Tuesday.

I'm an old hardcore PM fan and the striped shirts is one of his signatures. Also having looked at the clips I see they'll be featuring him playing SO MAY IT SECRETLY BEGIN on the Manzer (I think it's) 42 string guitar. Man that tune is so worn out... I guess the Manzer has lots of appeal. I'd rather see PM and JH doing more stuff together. The show's only 30 minutes long !!

I'm not so sure that is a PM model he's using on the gig but a axe he's had since the early 90's... It looks a lot LIKE the PM20 but it's not a PM20... I'll know more when I can see the whole show. But in 1989 after PM came back from Europe his ES175 got stuck in Customs a long time and he had two recordings to do: Question and Answer - and Parallel Realities and used this guitar for those dates... Like I said I'm an old hardcore PM freak - I have more old PM shows than I care to mention...

I found this link with a listing of cities and days/times the shows run. In my area, San Francisco area, the Pat Metheny/Jim Hall episode airs on two channels during the coming week, and since I don't have HDTV I'll be recording the one on KCSM on Tuesday.

BigMike:

I used my cable company's digital TV guide to scroll ahead (pretty cool feature) and find the dates for the Great Guitars episode. On my station, WNET in New York, it's airing at 6:00pm from 4/15 to 4/21.

Hey, my station is HD. Why don't you send me your TIVO after you record your's on Tuesday? :-)

You're right that he's playing his custom PM20-like guitar (ebony tailpiece, no headstock inlay), not his PM100, PM120 or even a stock PM20.

The half hour format is too short, for sure. But it's better than nothing. :-)

Johns,

When I get this show to my TIVO I'll burn you a dvd - the Great Guitars and some other really priceless PM moments.

Artfield, that guitar is one of the prototypes made for him. Maybe the one that made him say yes to Ibanez.

Here's a REALLY early performance of Pat's:

What do you think, BigMike? No striped shirt here! :-)

I've never seen Eric Burton perform. Pretty cool!

Purty cool Johns... what is that an old Fender 12 string ?? I say that because of that loopie headstock shape at the top. That's what Pat played with Gary Burton back then - I mean when you got Mick Goodrick on 6 string, jeez. Pat was really burning in that solo - on a 12 STRING !!! Thanks for the show. Nice way to start my Sunday.

By the way I looked at my TIVO TO DO LIST and my show is on around the same date yours is (my bad).

Mike:

Somebody on another BBS said it's a 12-string Fender Coronado. Pat looks so tentative. Nothing like he does now. Nice to know that he really was a mere mortal guitar player, at one time. :-)

Back to The Legends of Jazz series: this week's episode is the Jazz Singers. Saw a little bit of Al Jarreau and Kurt Elling, yesterday.

I looked at some of the other episodes and found more guitar goodies. The episode that follows the great Guitars is: Contemporary Jazz. Look who shows up to play together: guitarist Lee Ritenour, keyboardist George Duke and bassist Marcus Miller.

A couple of weeks later, the episode entitled, Roots: The Blues features Robert Cray and Keb Mo. Should be interesting to see how these guys tie the two genres together.

If you want some singing along with your jazz guitar, check out the American Songbook episode with John Pizzarelli and jazz singer Jane Monheit.

For something really "south of the border" watch the Brazilian Jazz episode with guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves.

Like I said earlier, this is a decent series for guitarists to watch out for.
