Hi Wonder if I can take advantage of the wealth of knowledge here once again. I am lucky enough to have just bagged a 1976 Destroyer, which, may I say, is the finest guitar I have ever played, perhaps even beating out my mate's '63 330, which is itself simply lovely to play. Anyway, this Destroyer has two of the original machine heads missing, replaced by functional but not very cosmetic Grovers. The remaining originals do not appear to be the same as appear on my #2386 Les Paul, in that the body casing of the machine head is slightly square rather than perfectly roundl, and obviously, we have a 6-a-side as opposed to a 3x3. They are chrome and bear the distinctive star on the back of the casing. Ok, so, how many types of these heads are there? Because I'll need to find replacements. And how impossible is it to find replacements, or even a full set? I have scoured the usual places and not a sniff. Any idea where I can look? Thanks for any help. h |

Aha. Just identified the heads from Harry's remarkable page. The #2386 heads are type 1336, and the Destroyer's heads are type 1338. Now, has anyone got 50p for the Time Machine? |

Hi Hackney Just took a look in my spare parts drawer and I do have some spare Star tuners, but unfortunately not the type you're looking for. These Destroyers/Explorers are great, aren't they? I happen to have one too and I must say it's a hell of an axe. Kind greetz, Harry |

Hi Harry Thanks for looking, anyway. Yes, I was shocked at how lucky I was - the first guitar I bought sight unseen, and it was just beautiful out of the box. I paid 1400e for it, including a LOT for shipping and customs (USA-Europe, bad idea) and now I want to just put it back as it was. The machine heads, obviously, and someone changed the pickups from Super 70s to Rio Grande BBQs, which are great pickups. I doubt if I can afford a pair of Super 70s, so I'll just put nickel/chrome covers on the BBQs for now, and we'll be away. I am right in thinking the original plastic pick-up surrounds were black, aren't I? Apart from that, it seems to be all original. I was pleased to see it even still bears the little Super 70 sticker behind the headstock. It's in pretty good condition, belt-marks and a couple of chips at the extreme edge of the upper horn, but the one 'problem' I can see is that the pick-guard doesn't seem to fit the curve of the lower horn perfectly, and a sticks out just a bit from the rounded end. Could this be a replacement pick-guard? All in all, a welcome third in my extremely modest collection, but still proud to be in the club. h |
