I think I've found my fave concert CD: Pink Floyd's Pulse. I'm speechless...but I'm a PF fan.

How about you?

My Fave concert video (VHS) is Stray Cats Live in Tokyo. My fave concert DVD is The Fabulous Thunderbirds Invitation Only.

Stray Cats because there is so much energy and an amazingly fat punchy sound for just 3 guys. Fabulous Thunderbirds because Kid Ramos is the guitarist I have always wanted to be.

Cheers,

Mark

Munch, I've seen The Brian Setzer Orchestra (Live in Tokyo) and it must have been the most outrageous show ever done. There is as much energy coming off the DVD as I've ever seen even at live shows like Santana, and the Stones. Only live concert I can remember that had that much sheer "take it to the audience" was AC/DC live on the Back in Black tour. I hope you are going to tell me its a totally different show, from before Brian and the Stray Cats split up, so I've got something to go find. I've also seen Dio live, and Ozzy live and, yes, I'm one of the OLD time Pink Floyd fans - I've still got 2 LP's, 3 cassettes and 2 DVD's of "Wish You Were Here" (mostly worn out).

Take it from an old timer, Brian Setzer is a REAL rock'n'roller! He must lose 15 lbs. a show.

That's a tough one. Currently liking the newly released Joe Bonamassa and Robin Trower DVDs.

Video - I have archives of stuff, both oficial releases and from TV. Seeing Danny Gatton play slide with a overflowing Heineken bottle is priceless, as is seeing Gatemouth Brown mimic a 2-way conversation with his guitar. I still have a soft spot for Jimi at Monterey, though. Incredible performance.

Hi Garyelcrrt,

The Stray Cats show I was talking about was filmed in 1990 during the Stray Cats Tour of Japan and Australia. The tour was in support of the "Lets Go Faster" album. It was available on VHS only worldwide. Japan also had a Laserdisc version.

I have archived my very precious VHS copy onto DVD. If you have a player and TV that can cope with PAL format then I am happy to make you a copy.

Cheers,

Mark

Magnificent offer, Munch - and appreciated. But nothing I have will do PAL at all. Guess I'll have to go buy it...

Thanks again,
Gary

Are you sure?? How old is the TV and DVD? Most sold in the last 5-10 years can do multi-format. Many DVD players can show a PAL signal on an NTSC TV and vice versa. Double check your owner's manuals.

I am happy to make a copy if you can play it.

It's a totally rockin' concert by the way. I've also got their appearance at the "This Country's Rockin" event in 1989 too.

Cheers,

Mark

Hey Johns,

What's that Pulse show like compared to the Delicate Sound Of Thunder live set? I was playing my vinyl copy over the weekend and was blown away by the sound quality.

Cheers,

Munch:

As good as I thought DSOT was, Pulse makes it look like a bootleg. The first time I saw it was at a BOSE store in the local mall. They were playing Comfortably Numb on a 52" flat panel. My buddy and I were instantly mesmerized! The $5000.00 BOSE home entertainment system certainly didn't hurt. :-)

The only thing better on DSOT was the young sax player with the long hair. It isn't that he's hitting more exact notes than Dick Parry on Pulse, it's his intensity that was captured on DSOT.

With Pulse you get David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright. Then you get four more really good bandmates and those 3 background singers who aren't as annoying as on DSOT. You get the entire Dark Side of the Moon done live. MOST Excellent! The camera work is first-rate and there must have been close to 15 different camera angles. On some songs you can actually tell what notes David Gilmour is playing. YOu can see the smile on DaveG's face a lot of the time.

22 song tracks, plus tons of other goodies for Floydaholics. The three song encore makes you "wish you were there". :-)

I just bought a 2nd copy as a present for a friend. Best $15.00 ever spent. I hardily recommend that you go for it.

I'm sold.

DONE!

Thanks, John!

(Plus we need the arrangement for WYWH. Been playing the acoustic part for years... got the lyrics... just can't remember how it all goes together... DUH)

WYWH is the first song in the 3 song encore (WYWH, Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell). I promise you that Comfortably Numb will put goose bumps on your arms! And the end of RLH is positively explosive!

Give yourself a treat and watch the whole DVD (or at least the encores) on a very large screen TV with a good surround sound hooked up. You'll get a great concert experience.

Thanks again John... I may pick it up tomorrow.

Don't worry... I have a Mits 55" HD widescreen & a Denon, KEF & Velodyne 5.1 surround system. Should work out.

I'll be sure to "share it with the neighbors".

JC:

Ehhh, I guess your system will do. :-)

The DVD isn't HD, nor widescreen. In fact, that was the remark that the manager of the BOSE store made. He said the original was shot in 1994 on VHS. But none of this mattered to me.

Let me know what you think after you watch it. (I'm watching some of the Alternative Screen Films as I write this.)

Jchester, a bit off topic but your comment about "share it with your neighbors" reminded me of a defunct radio station that was out here in California in the early 80's. It was called KQLZ Pirate Radio 100.3FM

Their infamous slogan was unforgettable to this day:

Pirate radio 100.3 FM, the radio station your neighbors listen too...whether they want to or NOT.

I loved that station...hehehhehhehe

Well, I did pick up the "Pulse" DVD Wednesday.

Haven't had the opportunity to give it the full A/V treatment it deserves, yet, but did preview a bit here, on the computer, yesterday. (NEC 20" briteview LCD screen @ 2 ft. away & a Cambridge SoundWorks Sub-Sat audio system = not TOO shabby)

What a laser show!

And Gilmore seems to be demonstrating the theory behind the quote I read from him a few years back. Something to the effect of, "I'm not doing anything that anyone else with a Strat & a Twin Reverb can't do."

He just makes it look so damned easy! I guess it is, once you've figured out how to plug the f***er directly into your heart!

Since nobody else mentioned it, how about "Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at El Mocambo!"? Man just stood there and played and sang.

Hey Johns,

I went and bought Pulse too. My wife absolutely loves it. Personally though, I find it a bit boring to watch. The lights and lasers are cool for the first ten minutes but to me they get real old real fast. The filming doesn't really show much band member action on stage. I guess this is because there isn't any. Dave G is riveted to the spot looking like a tree for two hours, and his bunch of hired hand muso's have obviousy been told to stay in the background. The poncey bass player is the only one brave enough to move around a bit, but even then he looks like some reject from a Richard Simmons exercise video!!

Musically though, the performances are great and the recording is very good. Interestingly though, my vinyl DSOT still has the edge in terms of sound quality.

Cheers,

Mark

Hey Mark:

OK, so I'm taking your PF fanatic badge away. What can I say? Your wife must have all the taste in the family! :-)

Maybe I've been watching a bootleg of the DSOT concert and that's clouding my perception of the quality. I'll have to watch it over again to make a comparison.

I take it that "poncey" is not a postive adjective in Aussy-speak? :-) As, I said earlier, I found the backup singers annoying on the DSOT DVD. I think they did a much better job on Pulse. To each his own, I guess.

PF is famous for just standing there and performing while the "show" entertains the audience. I expected nothing else.

Do you really think that DSOT portrays a PF concert experience better than Pulse? For a few seconds, I actually thought I could have been at Earles Court. Wait a second, maybe I was having a flashback!

Hi JohnS,

I've had a casual interest in Pink Floyd only - definitely not a fanatic.

I don't reckon there is anything wrong with the quality of Pulse as a DVD experience. It is excellent. To me I just find the reliance on lights and lasers rather than showmanship to be a bit tiresome over two hours. The guys are top flight musicians, so I am not taking anything away from them on that score. I would just rather see Dave G get into it and let the rest of the muso's put on a show too.

My preference for the sound quality of DSOT relates more to the fact that I was listening to it on vinyl than differences in the production. I have a good turntable with a great tonearm and an excellent cartridge. It just kills CD and DVD sound for depth, realism, dynamic contrast and detail resolution.

I was showing this difference to a non-muso friend using AC/DC the other day. My original 1980 pressing of Back In Black still sounded noticeably better than the new 2003 digitally remastered CD!! My friend was astonished to say the least.

Cheers,

Mark
