The Ashes is a term used for the cricket tests that take place between Australia and England. We kindly allowed the England team to look after the trophy after the last test series. But now the time is right for The Ashes to be returned to their rightful custodians. Yes, it's true Sixvsix is in Australia now, but there's a distinct possibility he's a member of The Barmy Army. |

True, I am barmy but can't bring myself to inlist with that lot. Can't believe we actually won it last year. What was it, 20 years or something last time England won? six |

Should we also point out how ridiculously small the trophy is? For our US friends who don't know much about cricket, it's kinda like baseball, equally boring too. The idea is there are 2 batsmen (like a batter) at a time, the batsmen have to protect their "wickets" from the bowler who hurls the ball really hard at them. The wickets are comprised of 3 stumps (upright wooden poles about 4 feet tall) about 2 inches apart, with 2 bails (smaller pieces of wood) resting horizontally across the stumps. If the bails are taken off the stumps by the ball, the batsman is out. Anyway, about a hundred or so years ago, England and Australia had a game of cricket, which somebody won (I don't know who, I hate the game), and the bails were burnt and the ashes were placed in an urn, which became quite literally the "Ashes" trophy. Now, bails are only small (think of a little wooden wedge to hold the door open for size). So you can imagine, not much ash there. And the urn is no bigger than it needs to be to accomodate those ashes. As result, the game (nearly) all Aussies and Poms are so interested in watching is played for the right to hold up a trophy that requires a very high strength telescopic zoom lens to see it from more than 10 feet away. It's about the size of a shot glass. Stupid trophy for a stupid game |

Here in Brisbane, yesterday was Yobbo's day. The day everyone goes off to the first day of the test cricket, get drunk and see who the first to be thrown out. If you take cricket seriously, it's considered a great cure for insomnia. |

Johns, this is the game we normally play when you need to fend off killer kangaroo's and funnel web spiders...hit them with the cricket bat ...and they won't come back to kill ya...hehe Just some clever person thought they could put men in white outfits and make a truck load of cash from the gate take and booze sales..hehe Captain Ibanez p.s. John, I promise I won't meet you at the airport with my cricket bat if & when you get the courage to visit Australia Captain Ibanez |

This may be my new home and I love it here. However, I'm afraid you Aussies are gonna get another whipping this year. Actually, baseball is my favourite game . Luckily the Aussies play that too so I'm a bit spoilt for good sports here. six |

Oh, cricket! Thanks for the info, guys. My step-father was born and raised in England (came to the US at 16). So, I got an introductory knowledge of cricket and soccer. Unfortunately, my Sysop duties require that I move this thread to the Miscellaneous section. |

"Australia took a 1-0 lead in the Ashes series when it beat England by 277 runs in the first Test at the Gabba." "Come on England, Come on..." Just doesn't have the same ring to it.

The Aussies won the original game where the name comes from, because the bails were burnt to symbolize 'the death of English cricket.' (The game currently on the mortician's slab is football.) Not a huge fan, but I do enjoy the banter, as to be found here. There is an alternative explanation of the rules of cricket for the completely non-plussed: A bunch of people get dressed up in white clothes and go out onto a huge expanse of grass and it starts raining. Five days later, after almost continuous tea, they agree on a draw. Somehow. Anyway, it's just not violent enough for a proper sport. Apart from the word 'hurl.' I like that. h |

I thought the South Africans played well against the Aussies when they were here earlier on this year. A bit unlucky that's all. Apparently the Pomms and the Aussies were toasting eachothers health in the bar after the first test. six |

Six, really! You just *know* we're not going to dignify that last remark of yours with a response. Oh wait... we just did. Now don't you go getting all cocky, just because England have scored a few runs, that doesn't mean they're going to retain The Ashes. But you can polish the urn for us if you like. Oh, what's this I hear, Ricky Ponting now holds the record for the number of test centuries scored. Go Ricky, go Ricky, go Ricky... |

Yeah yeah yeah..Pontin...Blah, Blah, blahhhh. . Okay so he's a class player. Still ain't gonna help you none in the end Looks like a draw for this test. Typical English then and more like a soccer game result. I think our lads need a good drink to help them settle down a bit. We'll have to wait for the 14th to really give you a beating. I know exactly what you're thinking.... Batting last... six |

Now here's something that I find baffling and utterly outrageous: the guy from the Barmy Army who plays the trumpet has been banned from attending the games. What were Cricket Australia thinking? It adds colour to the game, along with the chanting and singing. It's all part of the spectacle. Shame on you, CA. And banning the Mexican wave. Why??? What's wrong with these people? Maybe they want to go back to the days of cricket on the village green: polite applause and "Oh, well played old chap. Pass me another cucumber sandwich..." |

Besides playing funny games, you blokes talk funny, too. Is this match over? The only thing I can gather is that England hasn't done well and Six isn't too happy. Can we get a summary, but in the "President's English"? That way, we can all gloat/groan together with the rest of you Cricket lovers. |

John, Surely you mean the Queens English? BTW. It becomes the Kings English when Charles takes the throan. Eventually. I've got over the English cricket defeat now. England still treats Cricket as a gentleman's game. The Aussies treat it as a AFL match. That's probably why they're good at winning it. Plus sport here is a major part of the Aussie culture unlike the UK where sport is more of a pastime....when it ain't raining. six |

You get wet mate. THAT'S what's wrong with it. There is a local footy club down the road. Mate, I think I'm too short, too fat and certainly too old to run around for 2 hours. Not only that, I don't understand the rules but I'm trying. I like the fighting Grrrrr! six |

Well now, the good news is that the Western Australian Cricket Association have given permission for the Barmy Army Trumpet Guy to bring his instrument into the ground. And the Mexican Wave is also allowed at the WACA. That's why we live here, see, you Eastern Staters *think* you're better than us sandgropers. We know otherwise... I've lived in Australia now for 31 years, and I *still* don't understand Australian Rules Football. Why, for example, is a free kick awarded for catching the ball? It makes absolutely no sense to me. Free kicks are usually awarded because an opponent has committed a foul agains a player from the other team, not because you caught the ball in mid-flight. |

Blues, I have also lived here for 31 years (on account of being born here 31 years ago) and I still don't understand AFL. Apart from awarding free kicks for simply catching the ball, if a player unsuccessfully kicks for goal, they are still awarded a point for trying. Can't say I've seen any other game that has traing wheel goal posts. And from watching the final this year, they miss the goals quite often, even from right in front and unopposed - maybe their bad aim is why they are afforded so many free kicks. And Six, you like the fighting? What fighting? All they do (on TV games anyway) is this weird pushing with their shoulders and talk. Watch the Rugby League if you want to see a decent fight. |
