Hello all,
This last weekend i went out looking for an RG style guitar with a floating trem and locking nut and that jazz, my rationale being i dont own one and i'd like to start playing around with trem techniques and such. So i went off to my local Ibanez dealer and tried out some guitars. Among them were a Jap RG470, a Korean RG270, i also tried a Jackson JS30. I tried them all and playing roadstars and Artists i must say they all sounded bright and thin to me. Like I was trying to extract a sound I just wasnt destined to get.The guitar tech there obviously saw my struggle and suggested I try out some other bands, among them a BC rich mocking bird, a Washburn NX6, Washburn N4 (the bettencourt model). THe BC rich was very nice but very pricey. The Washburns were NOS so they were cheaper than the Ibanezes and the Jackson. Anyways, to cut a long story short, i must say i am thoroughly impressed by washburn guitars. Both the NX6 and N4sounded great and were built very well. I bought the N4 in the end for a measly $200. I tried the WI66 which is Very simiar to the Artist. it too was very impressive. THe timbers were good looking, the build quality was excellent, and the guitar itself had a more warm throaty sound than current ARX/ ARC and even 2005 Artists. the shape is interesting too, somewhere between a les paul and the tele. A very cool feature on the WI66 i would like to get on my Artist areVCC controls (voice contour controls) these basically look like the tone knobs but when turning them you blend the single coil into the humbucker for various tonal changes. It very handy and a great idea. THis guitar has 2 buckers that you can essentially make 2 single coils basically with these VCC knobs. Excellent feature.
Im impressed and definitely a brand worth taking seriously. I thought i would share my experience with these somewhat underrated guitars. |
