Anyone here have any experience with tone tubby speakers? Im thinking about it and I would like to hear from you guys what you think about these speakers. I would be putting them in either my Fender Blues Deluxe or a Fender 65 Deluxe reverb (Which I don't have yet but I'm really thinking about getting one!) Are these speakers really any better than the stock speakers that come in the amps? Is there a better choice? Less expensive? Is there any point in replacing them at all? Is the hype about speakers true??? What do you guys think? |

A buddy of mine swears by his Tone Tubby hemp speakers. He's a pro player and guitar tech who gigs hard and loud. Another choice for your Fenders are Webers. They make a wide variety of replacement speakers that are not overly expensive. Ultimately your ears should dictate if a speaker needs upgrading. Keep in mind that new speakers need to be broken in or seasoned over time so they 'soften up' a bit. Then their intended sweetness should be come out. |

Russ, Yep, I have done a direct comparison with the hemp cone TT's and a pair of very old Celestion Alnico blue speakers from a 64 AC30. The TT's were wooly. The Alnico blues were.... wonderful. TT also do a paper alnico but I haven't tried it and I'm guessing it will be brighter. Clapton uses the hemp cone TT's in his Cornell Custom 80 amp and most of his other amps I believe. The TT's are a lot of money and there are easier ways to get nice tone. If you are buying a reissue Deluxe Reverb then go for a used one. Then, you would be better off having some work done on the amp. Mainly having it rebuilt or handwired by a good amp tech. The reissue is a pale compariosn to the original Deluxe Reverb as it's built on a board and not a handwired chassis. Then again, if you have around $2000 to spend buy an original blackface deluxe reverb made between 64 and 66. After that they were silver face but with some minor alterations to the circuit you can bring a silverface to blackface spec no problem. The silverface amps fetch considerably less than the blackfaces. Or, If you are gonna spend that kind of money, have a go on a Dr.Z Maz18 or a Maz38. Mail me if you want to chat more on amps. six |
