20 (!) holes, including the one in the side. 5 of them with broken screwshafts stil inside them.

Other than this crap it misses the super70's and the trussrodcover. So no other big issues. Ebony fretboard, the first I've encountered on LP copies, immaculate frets, hardware and body. Barely, if ever, played. Just butchered.

I am sure it will be fine but again: why?????

Jeeeez. What was the bloody point of them putting a locknut on a fixed bridge guitar? Not as if you can fine tune a stop tail is it

Again... why don't folks just buy an axe that's already set up the way they would like it? Instead of mangling a perfectly good axe into a Frankenstein. (I'm picturing Gene Wilder putting a knife in his leg over this one.) ....coulda sold this one while it was alive, got decent $$$ for it and bought what he wanted.... yes? YES! And to answer the question "why?" the answer is, and always will be.... JAAAAAAACKASSSSSS. Unless the guy was French, in which case it would be Jacques-aaaaaaaaaaaassssss. (But you already knew that.)

Drilled out the broken screws (some can be seen in the background) and flattened the risen edges around the holes that didn't need to be drilled out with a sharp blade.
1

Filled the holes with maple sawdust mixed with wood glue, let it dry and sanded everything smooth.
2

Next step is airbrushing the repairs in high gloss black and after that coat the whole headstock front and 1 side with transparant laquer. Let it dry for about a week and buff it out thoroughly. Coatings will be applied tomorrow and then it has to rest for, at least, a week.

To be continued.

So we're back in the air!

The guitar is alive and kicking again. I had it all finished but did not give it enough time to set. The filling of the holes shrunk a little after I put on the black and clear coats so I had to redo it. It is fine now.

Now I need to find me a truss rod cover and some super70's with gold polepieces. I have the original gold covers and the pickguard. Anybody can help me out?

Great job, Paul!!!!

Sorry I canīt help you out with the pups and the truss rod cover. Wonīt a regular bell cover do when you adjust the shape of the lower "points"?

Thanks, Harry!

There is a nice set of super70's on eBay right now but the seller won't ship outside the USA. Maybe someone overthere can help me out????? Please contact me for details if you can help me out to restore this poor thing.

I think I can (re)cut a bell shaped TRC and have it engraved at a sportstrophy shop but I would prefer an original one.

It is supposed to look like this:

Looks good Paul. You could always use a regular Les Paul Custom truss from the 70's. They are petty close.

Paul:

You did a GREAT job! You're an inspiration for the rest of us involved in (or contemplating) a restoration project.

Have you cut a TR cover by hand before? I need one for my Vee project. I was thinking I could use my Dremel tool. Mine is the bell shape with the 3 screws.

Hi John,

No, I never cut TRC's before. That is scheduled for next week. I did cut some pickguards for my Custom Agents and they worked out pretty well. I used a Dremel tool for rough routing, followed by a lot of sanding. It takes some elbow grease and patience but it is worth the effort IMO. Now if I only had access to a laser cutter.....

I am interested in the pickups in the link below to put in the restord 2650 but the seller won't ship outside the USA. I already asked him.

Great job on the guitar!

My son has a black Les Paul copy with a bolt on neck but it has some finish chips. I have thought about using black nail polish on it and drop filling the holes/chips. Your refinishing looks flawless though and I don't know that the nail polish will be as good or as tough. That's a project for another day.

What is the big deal with shipping internationally, especially for small items? All it would take is for the seller to fill out an extra customs form for the destination country and for the buyer to pay extra for the extra shipping distance. How hard is that? Being in Australia, I feel your frustration Les.

No skills, just nerve!

Oh, and being a cheap-ass helps too,so getting it done by a luthier does not come to my mind.

'Won't ship outside the US'. I keep seeing that more and more these days. It can be a hasstle for them but it's no big deal really.

Did you get them, Paul? (I don't know who Soundgoods is).
If not: what do you think about the 104 bucks?

No,

I did not get them Ginger. You'll know my eBay account when you see it.
I do have someone over here on ICW helping met out though...... So the super70's will be in the 2650 soon.
The price is what I consider usual or fair for a matched set in this condition.

Hell, you all can send me all your Scruggs' if you want! No Weir's though. That's where I draw the line! Hihihi!

LP: Nice job! I can't believe the difference! I'll get some pics of my LP's together and of the whole flock up... hopefully today. Going to see if I can get enough brightness in the living room to get a good group shot. I took a few of some individual guitars outside last week but haven't gotten them on the computer here yet. Some of those turned out good, others washed out and were too bright. I'll post the good ones from both shoots in the group photos post (or at least a link to a page of pictures).

Bob,

I am pretty confident a good luthier can fix whatever he wants to fix on a guitar. Getting original parts and the amount of money involved are the only things to hold a good luthier back IMNSHO. Judging by the pics your Scruggs seems a very restorable guitar to me. I am sure it wil be fine sometime.

JohnS: I did a first try on a TRC today. This as a 15 minute job but not nearly good enough. I have to come up with something else to cut the beveled edges nice and tight. Oh well....

Paul, 'Antoria' branded guitars used the same hardware. It may be worth you saving a search on UK ebay for Antoria.
