Don't mean to start a controversy, but based on a few things I've noticed, does this site regularly edit user submissions as it sees fit? If this is the policy, then it should be made explicit, as I don't see any public notice of this practice on the site.

The answer is basically, yes. I CAN edit ANYTHING posted here, as I see fit. But the only thing that is automatically done by the board software is filtering "profanity".
Actually, I've deleted VERY FEW posts over the last year and a half. Probably less than 5. And unless the message was totally devoid of decency, I've allowed a chance for members to see my response and to know why I'm acting in such a way.
While it may be nice of me to post my requirements for expected decorum, it's certainly not a requirement. I don't have to have a list of rules posted on the front door of my house. That doesn't take away my right to speak to someone I've invited in who is acting in an manner that I find offensive. If they refuse to listen, I can ask them to leave and lock the door behind them.
Regardless of the easy accessiblity of this website, it is NOT a public establishment. This is an extension of my home and my hospitality. This facility is bought and paid for out of MY pocket. And as Mel Brookes said: "It's good to be King."
At some point I will put my "expectations" into written form and post it. But it's not high on my list of priorities, right now.
In short, the rules are:
1. Treat others with dignity and respect. Remember that Ibanez fans come in all ages, both genders and from every nationality.
2. Expressions of opinion and positive debates are totally acceptable. But, if you can't keep from attacking others or their opinions, then find another place to hang out.
3. Express yourself without the use of expletives. Otherwise, such words will be censored.
How's that?

I wasn't referring to profanity or derogatory language -- clearly there should be no tolerance for things like that on a forum like ICW.
I was referring to editorial "tweaks" on regular posts, such as changing words and/or wording of a user's post, at the discretion of the site. I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like a couple of words in one of my old posts was changed, and was wondering if there are any assurances that if a person posts something on this site, then it won't be altered without some form of notification. That's all. If these kind of alterations haven't been done, then my apologies.

I can't remember ever "tweaking" someone's posts. I have "helped" some by splicing messages and pictures together. Sometimes I have to copy and paste parts of messages and may miss something when putting tem back together.
If you want to discuss a specific message, feel free to email me with the particulars. Who knows, maybe something's quirky with the board software? Wouldn't be the first time software didn't work as advertised. |
